Brace yourself, TV lovers—the NBC 2012-13 fall schedule has arrived. Comedy lovers will be relieved to find that the Thursday lineup remains largely untouched; 30 Rock, The Office and Parks and Recreation have all secured a spot. Most noticeably absent is Community, which can now be found sandwiched between Whitney and Grimm on Friday nights. One of the beauties of television is that unlike its most obvious relation, film, you generally have enough time to try out a large number of ideas and see what works. A film can frequently take several years to produce and if one of its main plots, comprising 30+ minutes, is unsuccessful there’s a pretty big problem. For a TV show, on the other hand, a lesser plot can be five minutes cross-cut into an episode that, while a bit annoying, doesn’t do too much to interfere with either an episode’s momentum or general quality. ... read more

For quite some time, 30 Rock has seemed content to spin its wheels as far as character development goes. Sure, the show’s undergone some changes due to episode arcs, like my much-hated Dealbreakers one late last year, but its characters have remained pretty well entrenched in their basic roles; at their worst moments, nearly to the point of self-parody. The show’s mantra could in some sense be summed up by Jack Donaghy in last night’s episode: “People don’t change.”... read more

Jack's relationship, or at least prospective relationship, with Julianne Moore's atrociously accented Nancy returns to 30 Rock this week, though it looks like it'll be the last time for a while. Unlike Jack's last real relationship, there wasn't much tension in this one, but the main plot of "Winter Madness" is forced into play due to their dalliance, so perhaps it's not all bad. Still pining for her after all this time, Jack realizes that his shot at seeing her anytime in the nearby ever is at jeopardy. When Liz and Pete propose that the entire show should head down... read more
Found in: TV, Reviews30 Rock Review: "Sun Tea" (episode 4.6)
The most tiresome thing about this season of 30 Rock has been the entire Dealbreakers plotline. There’s a lot of other gripes people have had, some well-founded, some not so much, but for my money the Dealbreakers thing has generally slowed things down and turned a somewhat funny joke into a running gag that lost its steam some time ago. It’s sadly a bit like what SNL will do by taking whatever success it accidentally stumbles upon and reusing it again and again until even hearing about it makes you cringe. Dealbreakers had become like that for me, and the... read more
