Alison Krauss & Robert Plant—the roots-music queen and the former Led Zep banshee—pulled down Album of the Year and Duo/Group of the Year honors Thursday night at the Americana Music Awards, a loose and congenial affair held at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, the so-called “mother church of country music.”

The Band deserves as much credit as anyone for inventing the country-rock subgenre we now know as Americana, so it made sense that this year’s Americana Music Association conference kicked off Wednesday night here in Nashville with a tribute to The Band’s drummer/singer Levon Helm.

Listening to the upcoming album by Lucinda Williams, Little Honey, I was thrilled to come across the voice of Elvis Costello on a song called "Jailhouse Tears." Country/rock duets have a pretty long history and even some commercial success (see Jon Bon Jovi with Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles). But recently, they've also gotten pretty damn cool. Here are the best country/rock duets of recent years (and a few don't even involve Emmylou Harris):

Back in May, Paste reported the initial showcase line-up for the Americana Music Festival, which was to include (to borrow a phrase) "everyone who's anyone in the Americana genre." Also announced was that the Americana Lifetime Achievement in Songwriting Award would go to John Hiatt, whose songs have been covered by—well, it's probably easier to list people who haven't covered one of his tunes.

Bonnaroo starts tonight! And I'm going! And I've never gone! And I'm pretty excited but also scared that I might pass out in the heat! Or get struck by lightning! Or just get really overwhelmed and curl up in a sweaty ball at the back of the Paste tent! I hope there's a falafel vendor! I love falafel! Oh my god! Bonnaroo! So excited!

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss cover Waits, Zandt

|

When it comes to collaborative albums featuring covers of songs by Tom Waits, Gene Clark and Townes Van Zandt, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss are on it. Titled Raising Sand, their Rounder Records compilation premiers October 23, just in time for you to request it from The Great Pumpkin.

The songs were hand picked and produced by T Bone Burnett, with musical assists from guitarists Marc Ribot and Norman Blake, multi-instrumentalist Mike Seeger, drummer Jay Bellerose and bassist Dennis Crouch. Thus, Plant has stated Raising Sand is “more a band record than a duet record,” and technically, he is correct! So far, no one’s gone around shouting “Duet! It’s a duet, can’t you see?” in accusatory tones, so everything’s good.

According to Billboard, Plant and Krauss first played together during a 2004 Leadbelly tribute at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Raising Sand track listing:
1.Rich Woman (Dorothy LaBostrie-McKinley Millet)
2.Killing the Blues (Rowland Salley)
3.Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us (Sam Phillips)
4.Polly Come Home (Gene Clark)
5.Gone, Gone, Gone (Done Moved On) (Phil and Don Everly)
6.Through the Morning, Through the Night (Gene Clark)
7.Please Read The Letter (Robert Plant-Michael Lee-Jimmy Page-Charlie Jones)
8.Trampled Rose (Tom Waits-Kathleen Brennan)
9.Fortune Teller (Naomi Neville)
10.Stick With Me Baby (Mel Tillis)
11.Nothin’ (Townes Van Zandt)
12.Let Your Loss Be Your Lesson (Milt Campbell)
13.Your Long Journey (A.D. Watson and Rosa Lee Watson)
