New single out for upcoming Bruce Spingsteen album

|
Bruce Springsteen's new single, "Working on a Dream," saw partial debut in a highlight reel during a Sunday Night Football match-up earlier this month, but its best-suited introduction is likely the acoustic version Springsteen played at an Ohio rally for Barack Obama back in October.

It's hard to believe now that the special guest for the 1970 Super Bowl halftime show was Carol "Hello, Dolly!" Channing. In 1977, the halftime song was "It's a Small World (After All)." Paste has tried hard not to turn our magazine or website into a platform for our own various political opinions.  We recognize that people look to us for cultural guidance but generally think there are better places to find political commentary than a music magazine. For the sake of full disclosure, I'll be voting for Obama/Biden, but beyond that, I'll just refer you to The Economist. But music at the conventions is fair game, and it's hard not to note that last week in Denver featured pro-Obama concerts from Death Cab For Cutie, Stevie Wonder, Nada Surf, Black Eyed Peas, Cold War Kids, Jenny Lewis, Kanye West and Alejandro Escovedo, who blogged for us from the Democratic National Convention. And the Republicans have, well, John Rich, Gretchen Wilson and Rachael Lampa.

Born to Tour: Bruce Springsteen adds more U.S. dates

The pride and joy of the Garden State is finally ready to wind down his tireless concert schedule, but not before adding a few more dates. Yes, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band have tacked on seven more U.S. shows to their seemingly never-ending tour. Although they've been charming Europeans as of late, they'll soon return to U.S. soil for the tour's finish, kicking off with a three-day stint in (surprise!) New Jersey in late July.

New Bruce Springsteen book... just in time for the holidays

|

Hey, Boss fans: this one's For You. So what if it's pricey ($50 + shipping for U.S. residents) and arrives with suspiciously seasonal timing? There's a new book on Bruce Springsteen out there, and it's dedicated to his legions of followers (which include at least a couple of Paste staffers). Limited to just 2,000 copies, For You serves as a collection of fan testimonials to the sacred power of The Boss. Included in the collection are nearly 500 photos of Bruce and his E Street Band in action throughout the years, several of which are viewable via ForYouBruce.com, along with ordering information.

As previously reported, Springsteen and the E Street Band will return to America for a long run of dates in the spring. None of those dates include a stop in Bruce's native New Jersey. But don't worry, Garden Staters, The Boss hasn't forgotten you. Springsteen recently announced a three-night run at Giants Stadium in July, following yet another string of European dates. Bruce, your tireless efforts are an example for us all.

Bruce Springsteen extends Magic tour into spring '08

|

There's been something especially triumphant about the latest reunion between Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. It's come at just the right time - with rock music and the world at large still in search of new heroes, with the Boss' original fans now old enough to get nostalgic and a new generation of musicians discovering the man's past masterpieces. Maybe the critics prematurely anointed Springsteen as a savior when he first emerged from the highways and smog of New Jersey, but it's safe to say that he's now comfortable with being a universal icon.

The latest Springsteen tour has been cathartic and enthusiastically received, to say the least. Now the Boss has added a fresh slate of 2008 concert dates with the E Street Band, extending the euphoria to new regions of America after a trip through Europe. The complete itinerary is below, with the new dates in italics:

November
19 - Boston, Mass. @ TD Banknorth Garden
25 - Madrid, Spain @ Palacio De Deportes
26 - Bilbao, Spain @ Bilbao Exhibition Centre
28 - Milan, Italy @ Datchforum
30 - Arnhem, Netherlands @ Geldredome

December
2 - Mannheim, Germany @ Sap Arena
4 - Oslo, Norway @ Oslo Spektrum
8 - Copenhagen, Denmark @ Forum Copenhagen
10 - Stockholm, Sweden @ Globe Arena
12 - Antwerp, Belgium @ Sports Paleis
13 - Cologne, Germany @ Koln Arena
15 - Belfast, Ireland @ Odyssey Arena
17 - Paris, France @ Palais Omnisports De Bercy
19 - London, England @ O2 Arena

Februrary
28 - Hartford, Conn. @ Hartford Civic Center Coliseum

March
6 - Rochester, N.Y. @ Blue Cross Arena
7 - Buffalo, N.Y. @ HSBC Arena
16 - St. Paul, Minn. @ Xcel Energy Center
17 - Milwaukee, Wisc. @ Bradley Center

April
7 - Anaheim, Calif. @ Honda Center
8 - Anaheim, Calif. @ Honda Center
25 - Atlanta, Ga. @ Philips Arena

Check out ticket options at Ticketmaster.com. Given all of the gaps in that North American schedule, expect new dates to pop up in the future.

Also, as we reported earlier this month, Springsteen has contributed a previously unreleased live recording of "The Ghost of Tom Joad" to SERVE2, a Hard Rock International anti-hunger compilation album. It's available on iTunes and HardRock.com now.

Springsteen, Dylan, Hold Steady join hunger benefit CD

|

Although it's best known for serving rowdy tourists and businessmen at its global chain of restaurants, Hard Rock International hopes to raise money for people who really need service - the poverty-stricken and hungry worldwide.

To that end, the organization has brought together an impressive array of artists for a benefit CD entitled SERVE2. That includes the two songwriters whose influence reigns large over today's music scene - Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. Other contributing artists include KT Tunstall, The Hold Steady, Jackson Browne and Brandi Carlile. What's more, nearly all of the tracks featured here are exclusives, including live cuts, covers and rarities. The compilation arrives Nov. 13 on HardRock.com and iTunes, and also at Hard Rock locations worldwide. Here's the track list:

1. Bruce Springsteen - "The Ghost of Tom Joad" (Live in Dublin)
2. KT Tunstall - "Heal Over" (Live at Gaia Music, London)
3. Bob Dylan - “The Ballad of Hollis Brown (Live at Carnegie Hall, 1963)”
4. Joss Stone - “Big Ol’ Game”
5. Jackson Browne - “Casino Nation (Live from Melbourne, Australia)”
6. Citizen Cope feat. Alice Smith - “107°”
7. Brandi Carlile - “The Times They Are A-Changin’ (Live from Boston)”
8. Marc Broussard - “Bring It On Home To Me” (Sam Cooke cover)
9. The Hold Steady - “Arms and Hearts”
10. O.A.R. - “Dareh Meyod (Live at Madison Square Garden)”
11. Natasha Bedingfield - “Lay Down”
12. Mat Kearney - “Nothing Left to Lose” (Acoustic Version)
13. Ghosts - “Stay The Night”
14. Andrew W.K. - “This Is My World”

Bonus digital tracks:
Toby Lightman - “Better (Live From Joe’s Pub)”
Sons of William - “Bell Bottom Blues” (Derek & the Dominos cover)
Hellogoodbye - “Baby It’s Fact (Live From New York, NY)”
Josh Rouse - “Start Again”
Jen Chapin - “You Haven’t Done Nothin’” (Stevie Wonder cover)
Eli Cook - “Man-Child”
Griffin House - “Love to Begin”

Now, for the cause itself. All net proceeds from the compilation go directly to Artists Against Hunger & Poverty (AAHP), an artist-directed division of World Hunger Year (WHY). To learn more (and hear some song samples from the album), visit Hard Rock's SERVE2 page.

Bruce Springsteen: Magic

Springsteen's America
The Boss re-teams with E Street Band for collection of explosive rock songs

The American record industry has never been particularly receptive to the notion of gentle artistic growth, and, right now, expectations for aging icons are depressingly low: Mostly, we’re placated when an artist’s late-career output is anything other than hideously embarrassing. Accordingly, Americans are disturbingly well-primed to shrug off Magic, Bruce Springsteen’s latest release with longtime cohorts the E-Street Band, but Magic is arguably Springsteen’s finest work since 1984’s classic Born in the U.S.A., an infectious, relevant collection of rock songs that say more about America circa 2007 than almost any other record released this year.

For Springsteen, listening to pop radio must be disconcerting: At least a decade of vocalists, from Eddie Vedder to Craig Finn, have been aping and re-appropriating his signature rumble (which, in all fairness, Springsteen filched from Dylan, who probably lifted it from Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, who stole it from Woody Guthrie), and now the rock ‘n’ roll market is so saturated with gruff, pseudo-blue-collar rallying that it’s hard not to hear the righteous rasping of four hundred other singers each time Springsteen opens his mouth. Still, on Magic, Springsteen’s voice sounds as rich, vibrant and new as ever: Here, he bellows from the gooiest recesses of his gut, pulling from every inch of his body, pulling from his toes, pulling fire up from the center of the Earth.

Lyrically, Springsteen is still dreaming up suburban American anthems about folks named Bobby and Theresa; he still growls impassioned screeds about barber shops and veteran’s halls, about pumping gas and getting stoned. This is Springsteen’s natural oeuvre: streetlights, bikes, bars, girls in their summer clothes, blaring radios, dead bodies, night skies, bank clocks, small towns, highways and nights that end with slurping coffee at Frankie’s diner, “an old friend on the edge of town.” But Springsteen’s writing is hardly provincial or small-minded—he’s been rallying against the war in Iraq for over half a decade, and his disappointment with America’s foreign policy pops up in almost every track here. Even “Livin’ in the Future,” a boisterous, impossibly addictive love song, includes a handful of choice anti-Bush barbs (“Woke up on Election Day / Skies gunpowder and shades of grey … My faith’s been torn asunder / Tell me, is that rollin’ thunder / Or just the sinking sound / Of something righteous going under,” Springsteen muses over full-band bluster).

As with much of Springsteen’s discography, Magic contains songs about faith—in country, in God, in women, in barstools—and also his failed attempts to navigate a political and emotional landscape that isn’t nearly as familiar (or friendly) as it once was. On the piano-driven “I’ll Work for Your Love,” the band slows and quiets, giving Springsteen ample space to belt: “Now our city of peace has crumbled / Our book of faith’s been tossed / And I’m just out here searchin’ for my own piece of the cross.” The moment—in both its execution and implications—is near transcendent.

At current count, there are eight members of the E-Street Band (not including Bruce), and they can still make an impressive amount of noise; anyone who regularly watches Max Weinberg (clad in a grey suit and tie) tenderly titter away on Late Night with Conan O’Brien may have forgotten how convincingly Weinberg can destroy a drum kit. It’s a clichéd suggestion, but Magic is—like plenty of Springsteen’s earlier albums—absurdly well-suited for epic highway drives, with propulsive, rolling rhythms and rich singalong choruses: “Radio Nowhere,” “Gypsy Biker,” “You’ll Be Comin’ Down” and the Beach Boys-inspired “Girls in Their Summer Clothes” are classic Springsteen throwdowns, complete with sax solos and crowd-around-the-microphone harmonies.

Springsteen’s previous three studio LPs have been relatively quiet cerebral affairs. 2005’s Devils & Dust was heady and acoustic, packed with grim anti-war laments; 2006’s The Seeger Sessions—which saw Bruce and company revamp a collection of Pete Seeger’s finest folksongs—featured plenty of rowdy, banjo-soaked stomps, but faltered under the weight of its cumbersome, idol-on-idol conceit. 2002’s The Rising, Springsteen’s last album with the E-Street Band, was a commercial juggernaut, shifting well over two million copies (and snagging a Grammy for Best Rock Album), but it hardly felt definitive or even especially inspired. Magic doesn’t break any new sonic ground for Springsteen, but no one was calling for a reinvention. Magic offers what Bruce Springsteen does best: a handful of honest, hard-working tracks about life and how we live it.

Clear Channel assailed for ticket prices, stifling the Boss

|

Paste, in some ways, owes its existence to the rise of Clear Channel Communications. After all, it wouldn't be so challenging (and rewarding) to seek out signs of life in music and culture had Clear Channel not developed the machinery necessary to sterilize and neuter the radio landscape. It wasn't the first corporation to try, but Clear Channel has succeeded more wildly than anyone could have anticipated.

"We're not in the business of providing news and information," ex-Clear Channel CEO (now retired) Lowry Mays told Fortune in 2003. "We're not in the business of providing well-researched music. We're simply in the business of selling our customers products."

Shudder...

Lowry's son Mark now runs the Clear Channel schooner, and while the company still dominates the radio and concert promotion industry (the latter with spin-off company, Live Nation), the seas are getting a bit more choppy these days.

Most notably, the company now faces a serious lawsuit filed on behalf of concert-goers nationwide. As CNN reports, a U.S. District Court judge bundled five separate lawsuits filed against the entertainment behemoth together into a class-action package. The gist of these suits: Clear Channel uses its stranglehold on the concert market to disproportionately drive up ticket prices and discourage competition.

"We intend to show that Clear Channel bullies groups into using Clear Channel's facilities for concerts through its market dominance of the airwaves," prosecuting attorney Beth Fegan said. "The upshot is that if bands don't use Clear Channel venues, they will be playing to empty houses."

The suit incorporates plaintiffs from 23 different regions in the United States. These folks had to stomach some ridiculous price tags for attending shows by artists like Madonna (now with Live Nation for life), The Who, Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen.

Ironically, some people out there are also alleging that Clear Channel is actively working to stamp out material from Springsteen's new album from its airwaves. Roger Friedman of FoxNews.com alleges that Clear Channel won't play singles from Magic, the new Springsteen disc, because the Boss is simply "too old to be played on rock stations." This, despite the fact that Magic is well on its way to platinum status (and on a side note, has become a Paste office favorite).

Friedman isn't alone, either. Philadelphia's Daily Examiner notes that Philly blogger Will Bunch has ascribed a political motivation to Clear Channel's Springsteen boycott. Springsteen is staunchly anti-war; Clear Channel's bosses are closely tied to the Bush administration and its agenda, so perhaps this is no coincidence? In response, Bunch is calling for a boycott of his own:

"If you care about what’s been going in on this country — and happen to love Bruce Springsteen, as I do," writes Bunch, "then this should ensure that you never listen to Clear Channel ever again."

Bunch's rant was inspired by DownWithTyranny!, a blog which has a lengthy discussion of the Springsteen/Clear Channel fuss. Included at the bottom is an update on Clear Channel's campaign contributions, although the blog doesn't site any sources for its figures.

Let's give Clear Channel the final say, however, since the company is so rarely afforded that opportunity. Straight from the corporation's "know the facts" web page:

MYTH: Clear Channel Radio directed its stations not to play music from Bruce Springsteen’s Magic CD.

FACT: Although Clear Channel owns only 8% of the radio stations in the U.S., in the first days after the CD's release, airplay of music from the disc on Clear Channel Radio stations represented a full 21% of the total radio airplay in the U.S., including airplay from satellite radio. That's according to airplay stats from Mediabse. Further, Clear Channel Radio stations played music from the CD more than twice as much as the nearest radio broadcaster, which came in at less than 10% of total U.S. airplay.

Thanks again to The Daily Swarm for hipping us to the Springsteen controversy.

A new album, if not horse, for Bruce Springsteen

|

The B section of the newspaper, typically reserved for local affairs like work sessions on zoning and the Garden Club meetings gone wild, ought to rededicate itself to Bruce. Springsteen, that is, for The Boss is making far too many headlines for one weekly Arts & Entertainment supplement these days. The centerpiece: as his new album Magic tops international charts, word on the Billboard is that a few E-street strays that “didn’t quite fit” with the Magic tracks might find themselves on a new album relatively soon.

Editorials in the B(ruce) pages would feature cleverly-titled, ill-advised rants like “Bruce Springsteen’s Magic is an Illusion,” coming down hard on the politically charged nature of the record and his recent comments on 60 Minutes against wire-tapping and suspension of habeus corpus. Accompanying would be an appropriate comic likening the singer to David Copperfield.

On the business page would be this deal-turned-sour story about a lawsuit against Springsteen claiming he backed out of buying a horse worth almost $1 million dollars for his daughter. We assume this animal comes with a gold chariot with 20 inch rims and a built-in plasma TV or something.

Finally, the feature story with a touching anecdotal lede would cover Springsteen’s donation of front seat tickets to all his shows to the charities Musicians on Call and The Kristen Ann Carr Fund. Said feature would be located right here, complete with more information.

Of course, apparently no one reads newspapers anymore and that’s why we have mediums like this. Think about how beautiful it would have been in theory, as you click the related links below.

Bruce Springsteen thrice rocks Asbury Park, N.J.

|

Chalk up another show for The Boss and his crew.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band played their first live set in three years on Monday (Sept. 24) at Asbury Park, located in the heart of his beloved home state, New Jersey. The first gig was part of a two-night, back-to-back, limited-seating dress rehearsal in hopes of working out the kinks and familiarizing the band members with each other again as they gear up to promote Magic.

The set lasted around two hours, including a single encore, nearly a third of it comprising new material. This included the single, "Radio Nowhere," which opened the show. Check out the music video below:

The band rejoined audiences again last night (Sept. 25), playing an additional rehearsal set. Announced yesterday was yet another rehearsal show in East Rutherford, N.J. Tickets went on sale yesterday morning.
