Top Ten Father/Daughter Songs

image not available

Last week, you guys helped me narrow down my first-dance song choices (haven’t made a decision yet, but we love all the suggestions). This week, I present my father/daughter song picks. Every time I turn on the radio I hear another cheesy country song that would work—Tim McGraw 's “My Little Girl”, Trace Adkins' “Then They Do,” Gary Allan's “Tough Little Boys,” Heartland's “I Loved Her First,” you name it. But I inherited my love for country-pop from my mom and not my dad, so the twang isn't gonna fly. Here are my top ten—you can listen below. Too sappy?...  read more

One on One: 20 Single-Artist Cover Albums Worth A Listen

A well-done cover song is a beautiful thing—and, by extension, so is a compilation of tracks by a slew of musicians paying tribute to one of their heroes. But it takes a special combination of love and guts and a hearty dash of hubris for a single artist to tackle the oeuvre of another—whether a friend or a legend—all by their lonesome. Sometimes the result is a mess (like Dirty Dancing songstress Jennifer Warnes' maudlin, schlocky Leonard Cohen tribute, Famous Blue Raincoat), but when the stars align, it can be really wonderful. Here are a few of our favorites. (Scroll...  read more

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band to Perform Born to Run in its Entirety in Chicago

By now, it should come as no surprise that Bruce Springsteen is tireless, rocking stages with an energy that belies his 59 years. But perhaps the secret to his fountain of youth lies within the legendary E Street Band itself, which will help him perform their classic 1975 album Born to Run in its entirety at their Sept. 20 concert in Chicago....  read more

Rosanne Cash Announces New LP Influenced by Father Johnny

In 1973, country legend Johnny Cash decided his daughter Rosanne was lacking a solid country-music education, so he gave her list of what he considered to be 100 essential songs for her to know. The younger Cash, who has since made 11 records of her own, turned back to the list for inspiration on her next project, and—with the help of a few friends—will release her first album of covers on Oct. 6. ...  read more

Five Musicians Who Should Wash My Car

image not available

According to a story broken by the U.K. Guardian and subsequently reported in The States, big-shot director Michael Bay made sexpot actress Megan Fox wash his Ferrari as part of her audition for Transformers. This touching bit of casting news makes us pause and ponder who, in the musical universe, could stand to wash our dashing Pastemobile—the one with the stolen radio and the scratched-up paint. These five artists seem especially well-suited to work a sponge and chamois cloth while we sip lemonade from a shaded lawn chair....  read more

Top 12 Bonnaroo Moments

image not available

Somehow, 2009 marked my first Bonnaroo. After years of hearing stories of the hot, dust-laden, never-ending days in Manchester--combined with years of attending festivals and being unimpressed by inferior sound, overcrowded grounds and annoying sound bleed--I was skeptical. But I enjoyed every moment of Bonnaroo. Great acts were a given (as they've been at most fests I've attended), but the festival was large enough to constantly hold my interest but, somehow, still manageable. Sound was great, crowds didn't interfere with seeing or hearing bands, bleed was minimal, and fest organization was impressive. There are many great moments I missed. I'm kicking...  read more
