Broken Social Scene Hits the Recording Studio
It's approaching a good four years since we've heard new material from our favorite Canadian collective, Broken Social Scene. Word on the web is the band has holed up in Chicago to record the follow-up to 2005's Broken Social Scene with producer John McEntire. And we couldn't agree more with those newshounds at Pitchfork who tipped us off: About damn time, indeed.... read more

Found in: Movies, NewsCast announced for Serge Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life
As details for Serge Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life (Vie Héroïque) continue to come together, one thing is for sure: director Joann Sfar (of Ignatz-winning Rabbi's Cat fame) would prefer this biopic not be traditional. According to The Playlist, he refuses to use the word "biopic" at all, and his film will use special effects by the team that worked on Pan's Labyrinth. How this will color his 40-year sweep of Gainsbourg's life (from the early '40s to the '80s, stopping short of the poet/songwriter's death in 1991) is not as clear, but Sfrar insists that this won't be work... read more

As far as songs getting stuck in our heads go, Feist's "1234" is significantly better, then, say, the hook from any of Soulja Boy's recent jams, amongst many other things. Found in: Movies, NewsFeist and Constantines offer "Islands in the Stream" cover
Winking covers of cheesy '80s tunes by established indie artists are a dime—or, on Amazon, $18.97 new and $8.99 used—a dozen these days. Still, Feist and Constantines' cover of Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton’s 1983 hit "Islands in the Stream" is really quite stunning. With nary a bit of cheek, they've stripped the song down to the quietly earnest acoustic slow-jam it should have always been. Better still, Bryan Webb and Leslie Feist sound like they actually wanna make love to each other, which is not the impression we get from this chummy, vintage Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton performance…:... read more
