Kirby Mass Attack Review (DS)
Mario’s name has been plastered on more box covers than perhaps any other figure in gaming history, yet over the last decade, Kirby has consistently been Nintendo’s most malleable hero. While many of the series offerings over the past several years maintain the side-scrolling 2D aesthetic of the older, “traditional” Kirby games, most introduce some sort of singular key mechanic exclusive to that entry, whether it’s the stylus-drawn paths of Kirby’s Canvas Curse on Nintendo DS, or the yarn-based worlds and abilities seen in last year’s Wii release, Kirby’s Epic Yarn.... read more

I'm a sucker for anime hair, apparently. I continue to play games that at first blush would seem to be for a far younger audience, and I can only guess that I do it for the hair. Atlus is a favorite purveyor of my drug of choice, with their large catalog of both localized/published and self-developed properties, many of which lure me in with the promise of wildly-coiffed, spritely characters and punishing levels of dungeon crawling RPG goodness. Radiant Historia is but another in a long line of my fixes, and, like any addiction, the joy I feel at... read more

Japanese animation powerhouse Studio Ghibli, co-founded in part by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, is known for creating lush landscapes, enchanting storylines and beautifully quirky characters. The studio gave birth to classics like Oscar-winning Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke and, most recently, Ponyo. Ghibli recently partnered with video game developers Level-5 (behind a couple of the Dragon Quest games and Professor Layton) to produce a role-playing game for the Nintendo DS.... read more

Developer: Capybara Games Publisher: Ubisoft Platform: Nintendo DS Match-three gets grisly Capybara's take on Might & Magic feels quickly but deftly executed: an early study from a master of match-three. Like the studio's Critter Crunch, Clash of Heroes twists the simple mechanic into surprising new forms. You role-play five children whose lives have been upturned by a demon incursion. Each commands a different army—elf, human, undead, demon and wizard—whose distinct strengths and personalities unfold as you align units of like color. Rows of three form protective walls; columns of three make attack formations. What feels casual and compulsive in Bejeweled... read more

Developer: Level-5 Publisher: Nintendo Platform: Nintendo DS A second helping of brain-buffing puzzles This sequel to Professor Layton and the Curious Village is, on its surface, a tale of mystery. And, like many great mysteries, it opens on a train and revolves around death, deception and deduction. But the whodunit element—along with the charming Triplets of Belleville animation style—is really just window dressing for the meat of the game: More than 150 brain teasers that will push to the limit your capabilities for logic, spatial reasoning and reading comprehension. (Hint: If a puzzle seems to require a lot of math,... read more

When Nintendo announced Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the DS back at the E3 conference in July, many wondered whether publishing giant Rockstar was merely testing the waters to see if a Wii version of the franchise would be financially viable. While that may still be the case, details are slowly emerging about the pint-size GTA cousin, and it looks promising. ... read more

Platform: Nintendo DSDefinitive point-and-click, first-person adventure jumps from CD-ROM to DS—newly tiny, still impossibleAlthough Myst is an undisputed classic I’d never played, I approached this DS port cautiously. For every gamer who raves about its immersive mystery and austere storytelling, another laments its withering difficulty and austere storytelling. The player must discover the secrets (why are these two brothers trapped in, like, magic books?) of an eerily unpopulated island. It turns out Myst’s boosters and detractors are both kinda right. Wandering the island alone—trying to make sense of various bizarre objects and arcane clues—is a one-of-a-kind experience. But I found... read more
