The New York Times reported that Vivendi, a French media and telecommunications company, is set to acquire the recorded music division of EMI for about $1.9 million. Artists that are currently under the EMI name include huge acts like the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Queen, Beastie Boys and Coldplay. This puts EMI under the same company as Universal Music Group, which the New York Times points out is already the world’s largest music company. read more

Sony just can't seem to get a break. After announcing that they would have to recall up to 1.6 million LCD TVs worldwide, reports are now saying that last night Sony has had to freeze 93,000 PlayStation Network accounts due to security breaches. The network was also breached in April with all of the users' personal information at risk. In a blog post, Sony's chief information security officer said that a massive set of false sign-in ID-password pairs were attempted. read more

According to Deadline, Sony Pictures is in the process acquiring the film rights to Walter Isaacson's upcoming authorized Steve Jobs biography. If the negotiations go smoothly, Mark Gordon (who previously financed Saving Private Ryan and Wonder Boys) will be the producer of the biopic. The studio seems like a good choice to handle the material considering both last year's The Social Network and this year's Moneyball (both Sony Pictures films) have garnered widespread critical acclaim. read more

Today at Sony's pre-TGS conference at the Tokyo Game Show, they unveiled a slew of announcements including the Japanese release date of their new handheld system, the Playstation Vita. The system, which was on full display, will be released this year on December 17th in the Sony native country of Japan. Unfortunately, there has been no announcement about release dates in the North American or Europe. read more

According to Reuters, Sony has hired Philip Reitinger, the former director of the U.S. National Cyber Security Center (a division of the Department of Homeland Security) to head their new position of Chief Information Security Officer. The hiring move comes in the wake of this past April's hacker-induced PlayStation Network outage, which drew wide criticism towards Sony's lackluster network security practices and their handling of the break-in itself. read more

Still looking to bounce back from the frustration of their network failures earlier this year, Sony announced both a PlayStation 3 price drop and a PSP rerelease yesterday. Effective immediately, all models of the PlayStation 3 will receive $50 price drops, bringing the 160GB model down to $249 and the 320GB model to $299. read more
