Kanye West recently stopped by the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival to hop onstage with his longtime hero and frequent collaborator Q-Tip. The two raged through a very spirited rendition of the fan favorite “Award Tour” from A Tribe Called Quest’s Midnight Marauders. Apparently not satisfied with the crowd’s reaction to West’s presence, the former Tribe MC refused to let the song continue until the crowd’s enthusiasm matched his own. Let’s just say the bar was set pretty high.... read more

I graduated from elementary school in June of 1990. Almost immediately after, my Dad—who worked for Digital Computers—switched from manufacturing to sales, and my family moved from Marlboro, Mass., to Alpharetta, Ga. I'd already gotten into a little bit of rap music while I was still in New England, listening to more poppy stuff like DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, Tone Loc, Young MC, LL Cool J, and even a little Digital Underground. But when I got to Georgia and started at Taylor Road Middle School (which I attended from August 1990 to June 1993), I met some new... read more

Q-Tip might want to adopt a line from LL Cool J as his new motto: "Don't call it a comeback; I've been here for years." Eight years, in fact, have passed since the former A Tribe Called Quest MC produced the nine tracks that make up Kamaal The Abstract, to be released Sept. 15 on Battery Records. ... read more
