In honor of this Friday night's presidential debate between John McCain and Barack Obama (the first of three)—and my obsession with politics as full-contact sport—I've compiled the following playlist to tell the story of the 2008 election so far. Whether you're red, blue, independent or other, enjoy.

Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth heads to the opera

|
Al Gore's Oscar-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth is being reworked into an opera by Giorgio Battistelli for Milan's famous La Scala opera house. Continuing in the grand tradition of other movies being turned into operas (Lost Highway, The Fly, Brokeback Mountain), the opera-ified version of the movie that is credited with launching the 'green' movement is set to be performed for La Scala's 2011 season.

Al Gore hints at an Inconvenient sequel

|

When Al Gore's documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, was released in 2006, it won praise from critics and audiences alike, and scored an Academy Award (not to mention put Gore in the running for the Nobel Prize, which he would eventually be awarded in 2007).

A variety of rumors have sprung this week about the possibility of a second film, Gore himself even telling The Sun that he "will make a sequel to the 2006 documentary." However, a statement that Paramount Pictures released this week denies the existence of such plans, making the validity of Gore's statement a little unclear.
