“There’s no place for emotion in this. You of all people should understand. Business is business,” says Don Eladio to Gustavo Fring. This is an important notion, and what has always separated Gus and Walter White from the rest in Vince Gilligan’s criminal world—they get emotional. Up until this season, we didn’t know this of Gus. He was always so elusive and professional that we assumed he operated on a similar level of coldness that blocked out emotion. But as “Hermanos” showed us this season, much of Gus’ decision to cut off ties with the cartel and start a war... read more

“Hermanos” opens with a flashback from season two when Gus talks to Walt in the hospital. As is common with the show, they take the flashback and add more to it than we had previously seen. After ending his conversation with Walt, Gus goes to visit ex-cartel henchman Tio in his nursing home and tells him about his nephews dying at the hands of Hank Schrader. But then Gus essentially reveals that his entire family has been killed off, and it was at his behest. Tio, writhing in anger, can’t do anything but stare at Gus and seethe. Gus smirks... read more

“How close were you to him?” “Closer than me and you right now,” replies Jesse after being pressed by Walt. A lot of this season of Breaking Bad has been about the relationship between Walt and Jesse—both as friends and as partners. And while in past seasons their relationship has seen its fair share of up and downs, never before has there been so much at stake in their partnership. The dynamic in this relationship began to shift in season three when each shed blood for the other, and we still aren’t sure what the full impact of that decision... read more

“I am not in danger Skyler, I am the danger. A guy opens this door and gets shot, you think that of me? No, I am the one that knocks!” Walter White is starting to crack. It was evident in last week’s episode when he foolishly told Hank that Heisenberg is probably still out there. And while much of what Walt says is true (a major empire and business falling apart without him), a part of the rant rang delusional. Walt’s need for power and control is one of the reason’s he’s been floundering so much this season. I believe... read more
