When I think of the Beatles, I usually don't think of Hamburg, but that's apparently due to my own ignorance. After my Beatles tour today (complete with ukulele covers of "My Life" and "Shake it Up Baby" by our guide Stephanie), I know better. The Fab Four played their first gig as "The Beatles" at The Indra, a tiny club along The Reeperbahn, Hamburg's Red Light District. They weren't any good, but after playing well over 100 shows at Kaiser Keller and The Star Club, sometimes until 7 a.m., they learned how to entertain. The area is still a mix... read more

For Fans Of: Iron & Wine; Phosphorescent; Loney, DearJustin Vernon looks slightly out of place. The bearded songwriter who performs under the moniker Bon Iver (pronounced “bohn ee-VARE”) sits placidly on a black leather couch in an ultra-slick Manhattan photo studio. For a guy who started out seeking isolation and hibernation in a cabin in Wisconsin, Justin Vernon seems to be loving the touring life these days. Not letting that lack of fanny-pack slow him down, he's planned another round of shows that bring him full circle around the country. Having already toured with the likes of Iron & Wine, Collections of Colonies of Bees and Black Mountain, this tour finds him opening for Wilco and the New Pornographers, and headlining with Bowerbirds and A.A. Bondy, as well as heading back across the pond. In fact, this new slew of dates... read more
