Brad Pitt on board for The Odyssey in space

|
At first, it sounds pretty routine: Variety reports that Brad Pitt has added a new adaptation of The Odyssey to his roster as a producer, and Warner Bros. is reportedly trying to maneuver him into the lead role. Sure, his previous Homer adaptation Troy (pictured above) took its time making back its budget, but these are the kind of evergreen epics almost guaranteed a profit. Nothing to see here.

Trailer Stash: Australia, Benjamin Button and Seven Pounds

|
And now, a brief look at a few of the latest movie trailers to hit the web:

Australia
Release Date: Nov. 26
Director: Baz Luhrmann
Starring: Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, David Wenham

On the surface, Australia seems to radiate quality and prestige. Sumptuous costumes? Check. Gorgeous candy-colored hues? Check. Epic war-time romance? Check. Sure-to-be-terrific performances? Well, maybe. Neither Kidman or Jackman look entirely comfortable, and just because the two hail from down under doesn't guarantee they'll have chemistry on screen. Luhrmann's previous films (Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge!) have often leaned a little more toward style than substance. Despite that, the trailer proves there's plenty to be optimistic about. Extra points for the usage of Explosions in the Sky's atmospherically ambient song "The Only Moment We Were Alone."

First things first, congrats to my University of Georgia Bulldogs for earning a trip to the College World Series Super Regionals by beating rivals Georgia Tech 18-6—their fourth win in a row after losing the first game of the double-elimination tournament last weekend. If they beat NC State, they go to Omaha.

Brad Pitt, Paramount option Lost City of Z

|

Brad Pitt’s production company, Plan B, has a brand-new plan. Paramount Pictures, Plan B’s parent company, recently purchased a David Grann manuscript entitled Lost City of Z, the story of an ill-fated British explorer’s attempt to find an elusive, ancient city in the middle of the Amazon.

Lost City of Z tells the tale of Col. Percy Harrison Fawcett, the real-life inspiration for Indiana Jones, who was sent to Brazil in 1925 to search for a legendary city Fawcett called “Z.” He went with his son, Jack, and his son’s best friend, Raleigh. After a final telegraph to Fawcett’s wife on May 29, 1925, the team was never heard from again.

Grann originally wrote Lost City of Z as a New Yorker article in 2005. An expanded version will also be published as a nonfiction book next February.

Pitt will both star as Fawcett and produce Z. No word yet about who will play his ill-fated son, tagalong adventurer, Raleigh, or his poor wife back at home.

Ed Norton, Brad Pitt reunite for Play

|

The first rule of State of Play is you will incessantly talk about State of Play until it's released.

The second rule of State of Play is that you will talk about the way it reunites Edward Norton and Brad Pitt for the first time since 1999's spectacular Fight Club.

The third rule of...oh, forget it. The important news is in the upcoming film State of Play, Norton and Pitt will be working under director Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland) on a script by Matthew Michael Carnahan. Norton will play a congressman under investigated by Pitt concerning the death of his mistress, which is compromised when Pitt becomes involved with Norton's wife.

Universal Studios adapted the film from a British miniseries and the project is set for filming to begin in November. Expect girls to swoon in theaters soon afterwards.
