Current Events: "Joe the Plumber" Megamix

image not available

Last Wednesday night, a blue-collar hero went down in history. Toledo, Ohio’s own Joe Wurzelbacher—aka “Joe the Plumber”—was invoked no less than 26 times, making him more central to the third presidential debate between John McCain and Barack Obama than anything else, including taxes, education, the war, terrorism, the environment and energy independence.Seeing as how a playlist about plumbers would’ve been pretty short, today’s Current Events megamix will focus simply on great songs about guys named Joe. Hence, VH1’s You Oughta Know tour this fall, which Carlile is headlining in the manner of previous up-and-comers Amy Winehouse and KT Tunstall. Featuring “special guest” (is “opening band” considered derogatory, now?) A Fine Frenzy, the tour will donate 50 cents from each ticket to the CO2 emission-offsetting efforts of Reverb....  read more

A Brandi and Two Chasers

In a sense, this chaotic scene is a microcosm of the situation in which Carlile and “the twins”—as they’re called by Brandi and everyone else in their circle—find themselves as they struggle for a foothold amid an army of aspiring bands and artists in an increasingly fractionalized musical landscape and dysfunctional music industry.  read more
