Catching Up With…Brendan Canning

It may have taken Brendan Canning 18 years to release his first solo disc, but like his bandmate Kevin Drew before him, he has loads of help. Co-founder and leader of Canada’s Broken Social Scene, Drew planted the inaugural “Broken Social Scene Presents:” flag with Spirit If…, a solo album masked as a Broken Social Scene proper release or vice-versa. Despite the latent marketing cash-in with the album’s title, it wowed audiences and critics alike.

New York City does it big, and music festivals are no exception. Sure, the rest of the country has Sasquatch, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and countless other shindigs worth hitting up, but New York likes to thumb their suspenders with a mid-fall event called the CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival that's just about the biggest gig, well, anywhere.

Broken Social Scene extends tour into fall

The college years can be tough. Late nights out, living on beer and wings, having little-to-no responsibility outside of schoolwork: these things can start to get old after a while. At least that's what we've been telling ourselves since we graduated.

Broken Social Scene to tour

|
Since Leslie Feist and Broken Social Scene co-founder Kevin Drew have already tasted the savory nectar of solo careers—of their 2007 albums, the former made 5 and the latter 54 on Paste's Best of 2007 list—it was only fair that Brendan Canning, the other half of that initial BSS formula, got his shot at the title. As we reported back in May, Canning's Something For All of Us is set for release July 22 on Arts & Crafts as the second installment in the Broken Social Scene Presents collection (after Drew's Spirit If...).

Broken Social Scene’s Canning to release solo debut

|

Broken Social Scene member Brendan Canning will release his debut solo album Something For All of Us July 22 on Arts & Crafts.

Canning first had the idea for a solo album back in January of 2007 when he started assembling songs he had written over time into a single, decidedly album-like format. He produced the album in Toronto with Ryan Kondrat and John La Manga, and emerged with 11 diverse tracks that showcase his wide range of musical influences and talents. While Canning has only performed lead vocals on three BSS songs, he has scored music for several films, and often moonlights as a DJ.

Canning hasn’t strayed to far from his BSS roots, though. Something For All of Us is part of the Broken Social Scene Presents collection, which premiered last year with member Kevin Drew’s album Spirit If…. Drew and fellow BSSers Justin Peroff, Andrew Whiteman and Ohad Benhetrit contributed guest vocals on Canning’s album, alongside other guest artists including Stars’ Amy Milan and Metric’s James Shaw. Broken Social Scene will perform songs from Something For All of Us during their upcoming live shows, including performances at Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza.

Something For All of Us tracklist:
1. Something For All of Us
2. Chameleon
3. Hit the Wall
4. Snowballs & Icicles
5. Churches Under the Stairs
6. Love is New
7. Antique Bull
8. All the Best Wooden Toys are Made in Germany
9. Possible Grenade
10. Been At It So Long
11. Take Care, Look Up

Broken Social Scene dates:

June
15 - Manchester, Tenn. @ Bonnaroo

July
19 - Brooklyn, N.Y. @ Siren Festival

August
2 - Chicago, Ill. @ Lollapalooza
24 - San Francisco, Calif. @ Outside Lands Festival

Broken Social Scene coffee table book in the works

|

It’s no secret that many people who live the rock and roll lifestyle have the tendency to party hard, and so perhaps to alleviate their afternoon hangover they have a cup of coffee to put some pep in their step. I will even venture further to say that they typically drink their midday coffee next to a coffee table that has books on it. With this logic I can somewhat maybe understand why Broken Social Scene would want to put out a coffee table book.

The book, appropriately titled This Book is Broken, is said to contain an oral history of the band. Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, and Jason Collett are among the band members who will be featured in the java book, along with Justin Peroff who is responsible for gathering all the photos, ticket stubs, flyers, etc. for the graphic content of the literary project. The BSS gang is also getting help from the editor of Toronto’s Eye Weekly, Stuart Berman, who will most likely be overseeing the editorial legitimacy of the piece.

I guess we will have to wait until its release in fall 2008 to see just how awakening this table top text will be next to our fresh cup of brew in the morning.

Broken Social Scene Presents themselves

|

Coming soon! Broken Social Scene Presents Broken Social Scene founder Kevin Drew performing songs with several other members of Broken Social Scene. But, you know, solo style. It’s called Broken Social Scene Presents Kevin Drew, “Spirit If…” Or maybe it’s just called Spirit If by Kevin Drew, and the “Broken Social Scene Presents” element isn’t included in the title. Is this filed under B or D?

Either way, Arts&Crafts will release the album on September 18. It’s the first in a series of “presentations” by Broken Social Scene, with the next being a “solo” album by member Brendan Canning. Many of these "individually" recorded songs will be played by Broken Social Scene on their “Broken Social Scene Performs” tour this fall.

Does this qualify as meta?

Broken Social Scene

Dear Broken Social Scene,

There is no doubt within the collective psyche of the independent rock music community: You will all be sorely missed. I only write in the past tense because, unfortunately, we have all been informed of your “indefinite hiatus.”

The concept of a rotating cast of ridiculously talented, once-obscure indie musicians spontaneously banding together is, well, really cool. The fact that said cast managed to craft some of the most singularly diverse, touching, riveting and inspired pop music of the last seven years demands acclaim. How your band managed to seamlessly integrate two drum sets, a horn section, three guitars, keys and insert-instrument-here into an air-tight machine of flawless melody and fury is beyond comprehension. There isn’t one human being with ears who didn’t prickle at the Machiavellian outro of “Ibi Dreams of Pavement (A Better Day)” as the horns swelled into a cathartic crescendo of near-devastating grandiosity. There isn’t one romantic whose heart didn’t liquefy at the fragile piano motives of “Lover’s Spit” as Feist’s voice gently waltzed around the harmonies like a lovesick teenager discovering the beauty and comfort of commitment (your version was really good too, Kevin).

As a live experience, hearing your performances was akin to being submerged into audio ice water. The transitions were almost always flawless, all notes and beats intertwined into your sonic collages that built and tumbled with subtle grace and undeniable energy. There’s a reason that your fans were pissed off at Lollapalooza when you were denied an encore during your lengthy 45-minute set; your gigs possessed an intangible and sensational buzz that comes from single melodies inflating into roaring opuses of uncompromising magnitude. “Anthems for a Seventeen-Year-Old Girl” and “Almost Crimes” reached kinetic heights of momentum in a live setting that could never be duplicated or processed through a paltry speaker system. The overlapping cadences and vibrations imbued a body of emotion and power that belies the skill and commitment of you all.

Whatever the future may hold, I certainly wish you the best in whatever endeavors each of you undertake. You will always be my Broken Social Scene, and I will always be your fan.

Yours truly,
Sean Edgar

PS- Great show at the Variety, by the way. Your new song, “Halloween Comes Early To Atlanta,” definitely deserves the single treatment.

Canadian music collective follows up 2003 masterpiece

Granted, eponymous album titles are usually reserved for first records. And the stifling pressure attending a band’s follow-up is traditionally reserved for second records. But if you’re Broken Social Scene, such narrow rules do not apply.

The Canadian music collective’s masterpiece of a second album, You Forgot it in People, released in 2003, thrust the band into the indie-rock spotlight. Fortunately for those expectantly awaiting Broken Social Scene’s follow-up, this self-titled affair (originally titled Windsurfing Nation) delivers handsomely.

From the bouncy bass of “7/4 (Shoreline)” to the handclaps of “Windsurfing Nation” and the hushed, blue-eyed soul vocals of “Hotel,” Broken Social Scene builds on gentle nuances, compounding its effect incrementally with each track. The record’s culmination arrives with brick-wall force in the horns closing the just-shy-of-10-minute album closer “It’s All Gonna Break.” Serving as a quintessential musical coda, the track hits with such “what was that?” power, the only thing you can do is play the album again in hopes of discovering more of its rich subtleties.
