Memphis, Tenn.'s Goner Records has helped hold together a worldwide scene's worth of ragged, sleazy guitar rock with little more than willpower since 1993. They've released full-lengths from Atlanta's Carbonas, Melbourne's Eddy Current Surpression Ring and Memphis' own clown prince of the gutter, Jay Reatard. They run a vibrant record store in the heart of Tennessee. And they put on their yearly Gonerfest, which tends to fill three days with so much overdriven, yelp-tastic rock 'n' roll that, for the slightest moment, the city of Memphis becomes one big parents' garage....  read more

"I need a good girl," go the very first words of The Black and Whites self-titled debut, "one who will not make out with her friends." It's a not-very-rock-'n'-roll sentiment from a quintessentially rock 'n' roll band, one that seems to pull equal influence from the poppiest moments of bands like Weezer and Guided by Voices and the punkiest moments of bands like the Ramones and Black Flag.
