Considering how littered with corpses Colin Meloy’s songs for the Decemberists tend to be, it’s rather difficult to imagine him releasing a kid-friendly book series. That’s just what he’s been threatening to do since some time in 2007, though, and last year’s promise that he and his wife, illustrator Carson Ellis had partnered with Portland’s Stumptown Printers to release The Unfortunate Demise of Whitley Rackham has yet to come to fruition. Decemberists lead singer Colin Meloy and his wife Carson Ellis are certainly no strangers to intra-marital artistic alliance—she’s responsible for the art for all of his band’s albums and of his solo CDs, plus most of The Decemberists’ merchandise and a couple of live show backdrops, too. Carson Ellis' work, if not her name, should be easily recognizable for anyone who's ever picked up a Decemberists album. From the shadowy bodies floating into a sickly, sepia-tinged sky on the cover of the band's 2002 debut, Castaways and Cutouts, to the wizened limbs gracing the front of their latest, The Hazards of Love, Ellis has illustrated each of the band's record covers in collaboration with frontman Colin Meloy, who she met while studying painting at the University of Montana.
