Found in: TV, ReviewsComedy Bang! Bang! Review: "Ed Helms Wears A Grey Shirt & Brown Boots" (Episode 1.07)
It seems like every episode of Comedy Bang! Bang! should be a bottle episode. With all the weird characters and inherent strangeness in the studio, there doesn’t be any reason for Scott Aukerman and Reggie Watts to ever have to leave for material. In “Ed Helms Wears A Grey Shirt & Brown Boots”, all the action appears in the studio, which features both a smaller and larger studio, a place to make commercials, the world’s longest microphone and a serious rat problem. read more

If there’s been any problem with Comedy Bang! Bang! so far, it’s probably the way the various skits flow into each other. Usually only Scott Aukerman and Reggie Watts connect them, but just barely, as the show goes in any direction it chooses without any connective tissue. In “Paul Rudd Wears A Red Lumberjack Flannel Shirt”, the show rights this, making each segment flow into each other, making the show much more of one idea rather than a bunch of ideas thrown into a show, regardless of how successful they are. read more

So far on Comedy Bang! Bang!, the show has allowed the guests to supply much of the comedy, with Scott Aukerman and Reggie Watts there to work their own brands of humor in sparingly amongst all the craziness. For example, with last week’s episode “Michael Cera Wears a Blue Denim Shirt & Red Pants”, most of the major laughs came from the usual awkwardness of Cera and the over-the-top portrayal of the Cake Boss by Paul F. Tompkins. While this week’s episode “Seth Rogen Wears A Plaid Shirt & Brown Pants” doesn’t gain gigantic laughs like last week’s episode did, it’s a welcome change to see Aukerman and Watts bringing a majority of the big humor, even if it doesn’t always work. read more

Coming into Comedy Bang! Bang!, it’s kind of a surprise that it took until its fourth episode for the appearance of Paul F. Tompkins. On the podcast, Tompkins is the quintessential “second guest”, who utilizes the show’s open door policy to wreck havoc on whatever interview Aukerman is trying to conduct with one of his characters such as Ice-T, Gary Marshall or as we see in this week’s episode, Cake Boss. read more
Found in: TV, ReviewsComedy Bang! Bang! Review: "Jon Hamm Wears a Light Blue Shirt & Silver Watch" (Episode 1.03)
For the first two episodes of Comedy Bang! Bang!, the show brought out some of the greatest comedians possible as guests, with Zach Galifianakis and Amy Poehler taking the couch next to Scott Aukerman. In the third episode, “Jon Hamm Wears a Light Blue Shirt & Silver Watch”, Hamm showcases his comedic side that he has been boosting heavily since last year’s Bridesmaids. However this third episode doesn’t feel quite as strong as the previous two due to a few skits that don’t really resonate as well as they did in prior episodes. read more

For those who tuned in last week to Comedy Bang! Bang!’s premiere episode and found it a bit more conventional than what was imagined, I’m sure this second episode, “Amy Poehler Wears a Black Jacket & Grey Pants” comes off much more like the absurdist talk show that it will become. Sort of like a demented Pee Wee’s Playhouse, full of weird characters, (such as Scott Aukerman’s bookie, a talking book that along with the rest of his bookshelf has faith in Aukerman), surprise guests and fun little skits the show digresses into. read more
