“Paradigms of Human Memory,” Community‘s flashback episode that never went back to anything the audience had seen before, was one of the best parts of last season. It was a concept episode that felt perfect in its execution: the idea that while the show only has so many weeks of episodes, the characters still have the same wacky adventures together while we’re not watching. Every time Community does an episode fully in the style of another TV show or movie, it risks losing part of the audience who doesn’t know what it’s talking about. In an episode like “Critical Film Studies” that parodies something relatively obscure like My Dinner with Andre, the show’s pretty much guaranteed to be making references most of the audience won’t get.
