Deerhunter kick off tour, Microcastle gets physical
After its accidental leak and legal iTunes debut in August, Deerhunter's Microcastle, perhaps the most anticipated album by an Atlanta artist this year, finally hit stores in physical form on Tuesday (Oct. 28) via Kranky stateside and 4AD overseas. To appropriately celebrate this momentous occasion, Bradford Cox and company will embark up on a national tour, kicking it off on Halloween at their hometown's own Variety Playhouse, where they'll be joined by Jay Reatard, Times New Viking and Pylon. ... read more

For shoegaze mavens Vivian Girls, it's been a big year. Their self-titled debut was gobbled up by fans and critics everywhere who took heed of album track "Tell The World." Even a roster change couldn't shake up their three-part harmony fuzz-fest.... read more

Poor Bradford Cox. All he wanted to do was give away some free music, as he often does via his blog, and what happens? The "Virtual 7" No.4" he intended to pass along to fans somehow morphed into the passage of his entire MediaFire account contents, including many unfinished demos and Weird Era Cont., what was supposed to be a surprise bonus disc included with the upcoming release of Microcastle.... read more

"Where's the Lil Wayne iPod?" Bradford Cox demanded. After a botched attempt at micing someone's iPhone, an MP3 player was ferried in and "A Milli" blasted from the amplifiers. "I don't write shit, cause I ain't got time," Cox growled over Weezy's trademark flow before launching into "Calvary Scars," a track from Deerhunter's upcoming LP, Microcastle. The Deerhunter before us, wedged in a kitschy little DIY gallery in Virginia Highlands, was a different beast than the one manifested on its first two albums. If this (free) live performance was any indication, Microcastle is also a departure from the status quo, gravitating... read more

[Above: Deerhunter performs at Atlanta's Vacation Gallery, 8/15]Bradford Cox's uncensored blog posts can be informative, whiny, excited, grateful, often apologetic, and frequently (very frequently) include free downloads of mix tapes, virtual 7" singles and individual tracks from one of his two main projects, Deerhunter and Atlas Sound. The site reads like stream of consciousness, letting every fan in on his every musical and emotional move.... read more

[Above: Deerhunter perform at the Variety Playhouse, 11/30/2007]You were probably going to lay low tonight, watching (or, uh, re-watching) NBC's re-broadcast of last night's women's gymnastics all-around competition (go Nastia!). That's fine, but if you're searching for a less depressing option than comparing your own utter inathleticism to that of "16"-year-old Chinese girls, allow us to suggest Deerhunter's free show at Vacation Gallery & Boutique. It starts at 7 PM at 674A N. Highland Avenue (right next to San Francisco Coffee, the band says) and costs nothing but a few ounces of your hard-earned sweat. And if you just can't... read more

Bradford Cox sure writes some fun blog posts. We've said it before and we'll very likely say it again as long as he keeps updating, but it's unlikely that dude was bad at sharing as a child. And as long as he keeps making music, he'll eventually steal the Golden Belt of Prolificacy away from Robert Pollard, Ryan Adams or whomever else is flaunting it these days.... read more

The only certainties in life used to be death and taxes. Looks like you can add Jay Reatard's workmanlike output to the mix, because he's at it again. As part of Reatard's continuing 7" series with Matador, he'll be teaming up with post-punk dilettante Bradford Cox of Deerhunter to do a split 45. Cox will tackle Reatard's "Oh It's Such A Shame," and Reatard will bring his garage-rock flair to Deerhunter's "Fluorescent Gray."... read more

If 2006's Cryptograms helped rocket Atlanta ambient-rock royalty Deerhunter to national attention, 2007's Fluorescent Grey EP embedded some diamonds into the band's throne. And while what's next in the sovereign progression is not entirely clear (annexing local acts for natural resources? monarchical oppression of fan-constituents?), we know this much: on Oct. 28, the band will release its newest LP, Microcastle, on Kranky and 4AD.... read more
Found in: Music, NewsDeerhunter unveils Microcastle at secret Brooklyn show
[Above photo by Jeffrey Beaumont, from A Year of HYPERLIVING] Last Friday, Deerhunter gave the world its third album, Microcastle. To be fair, the whole world was not in attendance, because the concert venue was rather small and was announced at the last minute, and much of the world was not able to stop by a small Brooklyn art gallery last week to purchase tickets. Deerhunter and four other bands played the Market Hotel, a mind-bogglingly amazing (also: mind-bogglingly hot) loft largely off the beaten path in Brooklyn. The presence of four other bands (including the absurd [in a good... read more
