Lou Barlow and Dinosaur Jr. Tour Diary - 10/14/09 - St. Louis, MO
Been on tour for well over a week. In St. Louis now: a good place to start a tour diary as any, the gateway city. Sebadoh played our 2nd turbo acoustic (Jason Loewenstein on bass, me on guitar, drums on a boombox) show here six years ago. We sold 50 t-shirts from the stage and a woman was trying on t-shirts, on the stage. Sexy chaos, and one of my favorite shows of all time. This time, dinosaur is greeted by a series of threatening phone calls to the club from a man vowing to “kick our mother fucking asses”... read more

They say it takes a village to raise a child. But in this case, it takes about 40 musicians to help raise two children. In September 2008, the wife of former Miracle Legion frontman Mark Mulcahy passed away suddenly. Various members of the musical community have come together to record Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs of Mark Mulcahy, the proceeds of which will help Mulcahy continue his career while raising his three-year-old twin daughters.... read more

If the hypothetical world of indie rock and pop (no, not that one) over the last decade could be sketched out, common consensus would see connecting lines crisscrossing between New York, Austin, Omaha and Seattle. Amateur geographers though we may be, that's a frustratingly Amero-centric list, especially since it ignores the quebeçois charm of Montréal.... read more

Dinosaur Jr is seemingly one of the few bastions of the '80s/'90s underground rock guard playing it straight and not teasing their fans at the moment. We have the Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine saying they're back together, playing a few token shows, disappearing for a while then coming out of their shell again. Who knows when to expect anything?... read more

[Above: His Holiness Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine]A new flyer went up around Kutsher's late on the second day of All Tomorrow's Parties' New York debut. Earplugs would be available, for free and in large quantities, for everyone. Smart people (like me) had already brought their own: the unofficial reports from My Bloody Valentine's London shows was that they were reaching 132 decibels during their set, which is just slightly softer than a jet taking off.... read more

(Tim Harrington plays music, really. Courtesy of Jeremy Farmer)The buzz and short attention spans I spoke of in Day One, and the newfound diversity heralded in Day Two, these things imploded upon each other the final hours of Sunday, with one holy rockness middle ground rising up from the rubble. The moment can be pinpointed actually, if you were to witness Les Savy Fav’s punk-maestro, Tim Harrington, careen his bald dome into a city garbage can, demanding the crowd hoist him, and his new stage, into the air so he could finish his song.Post-set comment from a fan:Dude wanted up,... read more

It's become a hot topic of conversation in the Paste offices: has "indie rock" become the new "alternative"? Those who were around at the height of the grunge era will likely remember corporate America's attempts to co-opt the Seattle phenomenon, from record labels feverishly scouting for the "next Nirvana" to designer flannel in clothing catalogs. Just like that old "alternative" lifestyle, "indie culture" has always been fairly impossible to pin down. But that won't stop advertisers from trying. That leads us to an excellent report that the Daily Swarm filed yesterday. Camel Cigarettes, the friendly folks behind Joe Camel, apparently... read more
