Band of the Week: Dr. Dog

|
photos by Elizabeth Weinberg

Hometown: Philadelphia, Pa.

Fun Fact: Singer Toby Leeman had to cancel the first few shows of the band's latest tour due to a freak tubing accident that damaged his esophagus.

Why It's Worth Watching: Roosty guitars, soaring harmonies and trippy melodies rustle throughout the band's latest album, Fate.

For Fans Of: My Morning Jacket, Wilco, the Grateful Dead

All bands have different ways of disappearing into their music, different methods of preparing themselves to bridge the gap from reality to stage performance. For Dr. Dog, it's all in the name.

Lollapalooza 2008 round-up

Another Lollapalooza weekend has come and gone and music fans of all stripes left happy (unless, of course, they were fans of the Weakerthans, who had to cancel as a result of travel problems). Despite a record attendance of 225,000 fans, festivities and rock went on seamlessy under sun-filled skies each day. The festival's organizers outdid themselves this year with opening acts, starting the weekend out with a bang. Bang Camaro, that is. Other rising stars followed suit on days two and three with the Ting Tings belting out their infectious pop tunes (we overheard Love and Rockets' Daniel Ash mentioning that they were the only reason he was at Lollapalooza) while Austin's Octopus Project wowed us with a 500 balloon salutes and Yvonne Lambert's mesmerizing theremin skills.

Dr. Dog: Fate

|
Philadelphia revivalists refine Fabness

“Put that needle to the groove and sing, ‘ooooooooooooh,’” Dr. Dog croons on “The Breeze,” Fate’s opening track. The band’s fifth album employs unabashed Beatles arrangements as if the Fab Four were a genre unto themselves, and Dr. Dog merely traditionalists. There’s plenty of British music hall in “The Old Days,” but there’s also a hint of reggae’s aphoristic simplicity (“Chop! Chop! Chop! Tree gonna fall down”). Even on ooooooooooooh-absent “The Ark,” which borders on Raconteurish blues sludge, Dr. Dog eventually snaps to stateliness so dude can get his McCartney on. “From,” which follows, is virtually all harmonies, cool and pleasant. So instantly pleasing, the trickery is transparent, a hook to keep listening until the content of Toby Leaman and Scott McMicken’s songs makes itself known. One can’t blame them. If it feels good, do it. Right?

Dr. Dog ponies up Fateful album release date

|

Philadelphia quintet Dr. Dog will release a brand-spankin'-new album, entitled Fate, July 22 on Park the Van Records. The band produced and recorded the follow-up to last year's We All Belong in their North Philadelphia studio.

Fate will contain 11 tracks and clocks in at 43 minutes. “We’re gonna call it Fate,” the band reports on the Dr. Dog website, “and you can take from that whatever you want. We can’t tell you much, but we can tell you that when we sit back and listen, we’re real happy with the way things turned out.”

A whole slew of tour dates will be announced shortly, but so far, all that’s scheduled are a handful of festival dates and three shows in May. In the meantime, for a dose of their psychedelic-infused garage pop, mosey on over to the band's MySpace page and listen to this writer’s current favorite song: Dr. Dog's cover of Architecture in Helsinki's “Heart It Races,” inspired by the band’s stint as openers for the Australian ensemble, quite possibly outshines the original.

Barkin' at the moon:

April
19
- Burlington, Vt. @ University of Vermont Springfest

May
8 - New York, N.Y. @ The Mercury Lounge
9 - Minneapolis, Minn. @ 400 Bar
13 - Los Angeles, Calif. @ The Hotel Café

June
1
- Hunter, N.Y. @ Mountain Jam Festival
5-8 - Lawrence, Kan. @ Wakarusa

August
1
- Chicago, Ill. @ Lollapalooza

Dr. Dog makes Mondays a little easier

|

Mondays are big clichés of suck, plagued by jammed traffic, cold coffee, boring television, sleep deprivation, loneliness, asthma, lost socks, rabies, un-locatable beeping noises and locusts. Well, some of those things, anyway. The point is, what on earth could make a body get jazzed for Monday?

Well, how about new streamable tracks from Philidelphia lo-fi doo-wop rockers Dr. Dog? Sounds pretty frown-repellent to me. Yes, each Monday through Sept. 3, members of the band will hand-pick random unreleased songs from the group’s back catalogue for easy homepage availability.

Furthermore, the members of Dr. Dog – who began a short July tour last night in Lake Forest, Calif. - will appear on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson Friday, July 13, where they will perform “The Girl” from their latest album, We All Belong.

It might look something like this: Dr. Dog on Letterman

Here are the rest of the tour dates:

July:
12 - Los Angeles, Calif. @ The Echo Lounge
13 - San Francisco, Calif. @ Café du Nord
14 - Sacramento, Calif. @ Marilyn¹s
20 - Louisville, Ky. @ 6th Annual Lebowski Fest.
21 - Coney Island, N.Y. @ Siren Music Festival
22 - Camden, N.J. @ XPoNential Music Fest
26 - Salt Lake City, Utah @ Twilight Concert Series

September:
28 - Amagansett, N.Y. @ Stephen Talkhouse
