The Office‘s fictional Dunder Mifflin paper supply company became a little more real in 2011 when Quill.com signed a licensing agreement with NBCUniversal and began offering the brand’s office products. While everyone’s eyes were glued to the Super Bowl and its commercials last night, Scranton, Pa. viewers got to see the company’s first-ever commercial. As the A.V. Club pointed out today, everyone’s favorite fictional paper company from Scranton is no longer completely fictional: NBCUniversal just inked a deal with Staples Inc.‘s Quill.com website to license The Office’s beloved company name for use as the name of an actual brand of copy paper. The irony of Dunder Mifflin’s in-universe competitor Staples now selling paper under the Dunder Mifflin name aside, it’s a smart strategy on behalf of both Staples and NBC to drive up demand for copy paper in an increasingly digital world and help curb The Office’s declining ratings and viewership, respectively.
