This Week In News
Even with the Fourth of July putting everyone in hotdog-filled good spirits, this week started on a sad note as beloved actor Andy Griffith died from a heart attack at 86. Kanye West also snagged headlines everywhere when he premiered “New God Glow” at the B.E.T. awards, a song off his upcoming album. Indie music lovers were also plagued with a few unfortunate lineup changes as Girls lost frontman Christopher Owens, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s bassist and guitarist announced their last show. Amy Winehouse‘s estate (by way of her father) revealed that there’s still enough material for one... read more

Good news for those of you who tearfully said goodbye to Kenny Powers in April. According to Vulture, Eastbound & Down is headed back to HBO for eight more episodes. The network renewed the show yesterday, along with True Blood and The Newsroom. Nevermind that Eastbound technically had its series finale with its third season earlier this year—it wouldn’t be the first time a series has dragged itself out of the grave.... read more

I’ve known Eastbound & Down is special since the first episode of the first season. The pilot ended with one of the most intense coke-sniffing scenes on TV, as Kenny Powers (Danny McBride) and his bartender friend Clegg (Ben Best) furiously cut and snorted line after line. It made it clear that Eastbound wouldn’t flinch in showing just how sordid Kenny’s life can get, while proving that it could be disturbing and hilarious at the same time.... read more

Two memorable characters return in tonight’s Eastbound & Down. One of them, Stevie Janowski (Steve Little), is absolutely crucial to the show, as much as anybody who isn’t Danny McBride could be. The other, Ashley Schaeffer (Will Ferrell), can be a point of contention among fans. Is Will Ferrell’s flamboyant car dealer a necessary foil to Kenny Powers, a rival who’s even more arrogant and horrible than Powers, thus making our hero slightly more likable in comparison? Or is he an over-the-top cartoon that turns Eastbound into a bad comedy sketch whenever he appears?... read more
