Sugar, We're Going Down Running: Paste:Local Takes On the Nike+ Human Race

|
[Above: The author celebrates an unlikely accomplishment to the sweet sounds of Fall Out Boy.]

On Sunday, 25 cities around the world participated in Nike+ Human Race. Billed as the “World’s Biggest One-Day Running Event,” the 10K jaunt culminated in music concerts held in each city: Chicago got locally-grown Fall Out Boy, while hometown boy Kanye West teamed up with Common in Los Angeles.

Joining close to 14,000 other Chicago runners, the largest turnout of any U.S. city participating in the global run, was one of the most exhilarating and intimidating things I’ve done in a long while. For a 30-something casual runner, who hadn’t run more than three miles at a time in a decade, this 10K (6.2 miles) was seemingly insurmountable challenge. But it was well worth the aches and pains that are still with me two days later.

On Sunday, more than 10,000 runners are expected to participate in the Nike+ Human Race Chicago, being touted as the "World's Biggest One-Day Running Event"-- and it's not too late to join them.

The 10K course flanks the Field Museum campus, routes around Lakeshore Drive and culminates at Soldier Field where runners can see Chicago’s own Fall Out Boy in concert. Middle distance runner Dathan Ritzenhein will also attend the local festivities. While several cities are already sold out, Chicagoans can still register at NikePlus.com.

The Hush Sound Gets Political

|

Just in time for the Democratic National Convention, the indie-pop quartet “The Hush Sound” have released their own super-catchy Barack Obama campaign song.
The group’s lead singer, Greta Salpeter says the song began as joke, which included the lyrics “We believe in Barack Obama;loves you and he loves your mama.” But the punch line slowly turned into a full-blown song, and Salpeter says she realized she wasn’t kidding anymore. “We’re actually pretty serious. He cares for people young and old, why not write a song about him?”
Despite their conviction, Greta and her co-writer Darren Wilson decided to keep things light, opting out of using a will.i.am-style delivery featured in the wildly popular Obama tribute “Yes We Can”, and going for a Will Smith-inspired rap.  While it may never reach the viral success of the “Obama Girl”, Fall Out Boy has picked up the song for their Democratic National Convention Mixtape which is currently making the rounds in Denver.  So far, neither the Hush Sound, nor Fall Out Boy have given word on a possible follow-up release of a Joe Biden tribute song.

Fall Out Boy to play Antarctica, emo penguins cry in joy

|

It's the end of the world as we know it. No, really, it's the end of the world—literally, Antarctica—and Fall Out Boy will be there on March 25, fiddling (metaphorically) for the elephant seals and whoever has the time and money ($2,500!) to secure a seat on the 100-passenger Whisper Jet that will carry the band to and from the icy floes for its performance at an unspecified "research facility."

Last week, the members of FOB unleashed a cryptic website (SevenContinents.tv) listing historic rock 'n' roll moments ("Elvis on Ed Sullivan, the Beatles at Shea, the Stones on a flat bed truck thru [sic] NYC, Guns N Roses/Metallica tour...") next to a group of penguins whose quizzical looks seem to indicate that they're just as confused as the rest of us.

Although they're far from the first band to play on the southernmost continent, according to a blog post from bass player Pete Wentz, FOB are hoping to set a new Guinness World Record by being "the first band to play a concert on all seven continents."

"Well, I was just sitting around and wrote [FOB's manager] Bob [McLynn] an e-mail saying, 'Let's be the first band to go to all five continents' — only he wrote wrote me back, 'There are seven,' " Wentz told MTV News.

Wentz also assuaged the wails of the (many, many) FOB fans who won't be able to make the trip, adding that in addition to representatives from Greenpeace, the band will have a photographer and videographer (not to mention MTV News; oh please, let them give this assignment to Kurt Loder) present to capture every last drop of frozen eyeliner that squeezes from Wentz's eyes on the record-breaking trip. Thanks to The Daily Swarm for this hot (cold?) tip!
