Alcatraz Review: "Webb Porter" (Episode 1.11)
When watching _Alcatraz_, I like my criminals as weird as possible. I don’t mind the occasional bank robber or innocent guard, but I’m always more keen to a crazed man sniping women at an amusement park or a mixologist poisoning rude people at a country club. “Webb Porter” is probably one of our creepiest criminals thus far and ushers in another pretty good episode before the season, and possibly the series, ends next week. read more

On _New Girl_, no one has garnered more laughs from me than Schmidt. He’s a cocky, organized, control freak that is prone to making himself more so throughout every episode and unusual Schmidt witticism. Out of all the characters, including Jess, Schmidt has probably become the most fleshed out character. We know more about his past, his job, why he is who he is and his romantic life than any of the other characters at this point. It almost seems like Schmidt is becoming more of a lead than even Jess. While I have no problem with the switch of focus, it’s a shame that “Control”’s writing isn’t up to par with what Max Greenfield can do with this character. read more

As we reach the last few episodes of _Alcatraz_ for its premiere season, I must say I like the direction it has been heading. It is not a show that goes for too much change from week to week, but it does a fine job of deepening the world they are building and the ideas the show is clearly trying to reinforce through the weekly criminal the protagonists are hunting down. read more

Most modern sitcoms have an episode where everything sort of clicks, leaving the audience to go “THAT’S why I watch this show.” It’s usually an episode that gets to the heart of what a show is about. Some of my personal favorites include _The Office_’s “Booze Cruise”, “Harvest Festival” on _Parks and Recreation_ or _Community_’s “Modern Warfare”. With “Injured”, _New Girl_ has made their first episode that feels just like that. read more

When Napoleon Dynamite debuted a mere five episodes ago, it had to deal with living under the shadow of a cult classic that was over quoted and over merchandised. To the show’s detriment, Napoleon Dynamite went for fan-service, constantly referencing moments from the film in hopes of getting mild chuckles from its audience. While this started off as the show’s first glaring problem, it is no longer the only problem. With the final episode of it’s first season, ‘FFA”, Napoleon Dynamite dumbs down the people of Oklahoma, belittles the characters into caricatures, relies on one first “catch phrases” from the film, and reuses the same pitting of character vs. character that half the season as been built around. read more

From a narrative perspective, I’ve always thought that the existence of the Observers was problematic. On one hand, they work symbolically as an analogue for the audience. Expressionless and unemotional, they project no personality of their own and are mostly content to simple stand idly by and watch the events of the show unfold. That is, in fact, their stated role. In practice, however, their presence is considerably more complicated. For starters, the Observer September insists on repeatedly interfering in the events he is observing. Second, they are a poor representative of us the audience since they know everything that is going to happen in every timeline and we have trouble keeping up with which timeline we’re even watching from week to week. read more
