Film Friday: George Lucas and the Canadian Force
When the National Film Board of Canada released an iPhone application last week, I naturally thought of Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, and Yoda. For some people, trolling through the NFB’s video archives will undoubtedly bring to mind those three famous Canadians.... read more

Few, if any, of the most influential directors of all time can say they've only directed six films. Yet, after four Star Wars movies, the very influential American Graffiti and his first effort, THX 1138, George Lucas can claim just that. And really, he was part of this category after his third film, Star Wars, which, besides setting the standard for modern special effects, spawned companies like Skywalker Sound and Industrial Light and Magic, as well as the single most important merchandising campaign in film history.... read more

It was 1998, and the Star Wars saga was about to continue with the release of Episode I: The Phantom Menace, 15 years after the last Star Wars episode. Meanwhile, far, far away in the galaxy of Austin, Texas, aspiring young writer Ernie Cline had begun his own saga, Fanboys, embarking on a 10-year journey that would involve the likes of George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Kevin Spacey, William Shatner, Princess Leia, Lando Calrissian and web icon Harry Knowles, eventually lead to a historic battle with big shot movie producer Harvey Weinstein and then culminate with this month’s improbable release of... read more

I have a four year old son that has seen the first Star Wars trilogy 5 times. Yes, he is junkie and the "Force" is the smack. Yesterday on Santa's Lap, he went into a didactic analysis of how Lando Calrissian is both a good guy and a bad guy before asking the bug eyed, red nosed jolly old elf for Jabba's Barge AND a Sarlacc Pit.... read more

Another Star Wars side-story taking place in between episodes III and IV will grace the television screen, according to an EW interview with the franchise's creator George Lucas. “We were doing 24, and now we’re going to move down the street here and do The Wire,” Lucas said when comparing the untitled live-action TV series with Episode IV. “It’s just different people doing the same thing in the same city.” Despite having just finished the first year of the Clone Wars CGI television show (with two more seasons of that production to come), Lucas plans to script 100 episodes for... read more

Movie goers haven't seen the last of the Star Wars franchise. Clone Wars, chronicling the events between Episodes II and III, will take to the big screen this August as an event that will kick off the 3-D series' launch on Cartoon Network. Distributed by Warner Bros. instead of 20th Century Fox, Clone Wars will mark Lucasfilm's first use of CGI in an animated Star Wars spin-off, working as a higher-budget expansion to a 2003 cartoon miniseries of the same name.
