Bonnaroo 2008: Day 3

|
Apologies: I was unable to blog about Saturday at Bonnaroo because of Saturday at Bonnaroo. It's Sunday afternoon now, and with the festival still buzzing and thumping all around us (am currently at our tent in the Sonic Village, with a band called Harrybu McCage doing their thing on the stage next door) I'm just now getting around to processing everything from the past thirty-something hours.

Festivus
The Southern Comfort Music Experience (SCMX) is making its way around the country and Paste is on board to provide a firsthand account of the goings on. Centennial Olympic Park in downtown Atlanta served as the kick-off venue for this year’s SCMX series.  Other cities include: Denver, Colo., San Diego, Calif., Madison, Wis., Saratoga Springs, N.Y. and Tempe, Ariz.

First up for the afternoon was an interesting collective introduced as the ‘best rock band out of Boston” called Bang Camaro. Bringing back the glory days of Dokken and Winger, the band featured a chorus of seven singers and had a unique stage set-up - three guitarists and a bass player front and center with seven singers lined up behind their axemen.  With songs titled “Pleasure, Pleasure” and "Rock of Mages," these boys don’t disappoint if you’ve got an affinity for Schlock Rock. Their synchronized headbanging coupled with in-unision fist pumping would make any PBR guzzler proud.  If the following lyrics are any example, these metalheads from Beantown know how to rock.

You Must Live Tough!

You Must Love Tough!

You Must Die Tough!

You Must RRRock Tough!

Ghostland Observatory readies for tour, new album

|

Electro-rock outfit Ghostland Observatory is ready to release its third LP, Robotique Majestique, on Feb. 23., and to celebrate, the band has lined up a few live dates. And much like the lovechild of The White Stripes and The Rapture, Ghostland will let you groove to the big beat before leveling you with a massive chorus.

The hard playing duo will kick off the tour in its hometown of Austin, Texas, and will be making a stop at the Langerado Music Festival on March 8 (no surprise, as pretty much everyone in the world is playing there too, including the Beastie Boys, Of Montreal, Dan Deacon, and The Roots).

February:
29 - Austin, Texas @ Austin Music Hall

March:
8 - Everglades National Park, Fla. @ Langerado Music Festival
13 - New Orleans, La. @ House of Blues
28 - New York, N.Y. @ Webster Hall
29 - Washington, D.C. @ Nightclub 9:30

April:
3 - Portland, Ore. @ Crystal Ballroom
4 - Seattle, Wash. @ Showbox at The Market
5 - Seattle, Wash. @ Showbox at The Market
17 - San Francisco, Calif. @ The Mezzanine
18 - Los Angeles, Calif. @ Henry Fonda Theatre

Ghostland Observatory takes it to the Austin City Limits

|

Usually, PBS' Austin City Limits series inspires images of restrained gentility: Patty Griffin performing a spare acoustic set, Norah Jones tickling the ivories, or Wilco its thing. But occasionally, the organizers will throw viewers a curveball. Grindin', dirty electronic duo Ghostland Observatory certainly doesn't confirm to the Austin City Limits stereotype, but such exceptions to the rule are just what makes the series great.

On Nov. 13, the Observatory will release a DVD of its performance for City Limits. It's the group's milestone first DVD release, so some sort of awkward celebratory dancing might be in order. Ghostland Observatory actually makes a pretty good soundtrack for that sort of thing.

The band still has a smattering of November dates for those who want to catch those pigtails of power live and in person:

November
9 - Houston, Texas @ Warehouse Live
29 - San Francisco, Calif. @ Mezzanine
30 - Los Angeles, Calif. @ Music Box @ Fonda Theatre
