Damon Albarn recently appeared on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show to perform a song from the score he’s written for Rufus Norris’ upcoming Dr Dee opera. Based on the life of a 16th century scientist, the opera serves as a bit of a history lesson, telling of a “kingdom of broken hearts.” The Gorillaz head honcho had a cellist and a guitarist backing him up for the BBC gig—it will be interesting to see what he brings out for the actual showing....  read more

Damon Albarn has always had an knack for drama with the animated adventures of his fictional band Gorillaz, so opera is the next logical step, right? The Blur frontman is collaborating with British theater director Rufus Norris to create Dr Dee: An English Opera, which Albarn will write and perform music for. The opera will be based on the life of Elizabethan scholar John Dee, and Albarn told the BBC that his interest in the project came from “a really strange emotional connection” to his English heritage.
