Pearl Jamband: Is Pearl Jam a Modern Grateful Dead?

image not available

Pearl Jam has long been linked to flannel, but what about tie-dye? As the band closes in on its second decade making music, Pearl Jam and its follow-them-anywhere fans have slowly become one of the tightest communities in rock ’n’ roll, complete with a vibrant bootleg trade centered around the band’s ever-changing, much-lauded live show that many claim transcends the pomp and circumstance of normal rock shows for something more human. Sound like a mouthful? Sure. Sound like the Grateful Dead? Absolutely....  read more

Nile Songs: My Middle East & North Africa Playlist, Had I Accompanied President Obama to Egypt

image not available

President Obama gave a speech at Cairo University yesterday in which he reached out to Muslims, decried extremism and the murder of innocents, and outlined his administration's policies regarding a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine. Regardless of your views on the successes or shortcomings of the president's hotly debated speech, I'd bet us diehard music fans can all agree that there are some pretty amazingly cool songs inspired the Arab and Muslim cultures of the Middle East and North Africa.Had I been able to accompany the president on this historic trip, here are a few songs I would've loaded into...  read more

Green-Collar Rock: Great Nature Songs Vol. 1 (Water)

image not available

With this week's inauguration of new President Barack Obama, there's been a lot of talk about green-collar jobs and making long-term investments by implementing environmentally sound policies now. It got me thinking about what we're protecting by doing this—first and foremost, the health and well-being of ourselves and future generations. But it's also about preserving this beautiful natural world we inhabit. There is no shortage of amazing songs that celebrate or draw from this beauty. Classics like John Denver's "Rocky Mountain High" and The Beatles' "Blackbird" come immediately to mind, but there are so many more. Here are a few favorites,...  read more

The Coolest Beatles Songs You Might Have Missed, Vol. 3

image not available

Today's list is the third installment in a series that will run every Friday for the next few weeks, in which I'll highlight my favorite lesser-known Beatles tracks.  John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr wrote and recorded such consistently amazing songs that, even if you ignore all their #1 hits and everything on their famous Red and Blue best-of compilations (which I'll be doing for these more obscure Beatles lists), there are still dozens and dozens of amazing songs, some of which you might've missed along the way—even if The Beatles are the biggest, most influential band...  read more

Current Events: When Pirates Attack - Paste counts down the Top 20 Best Pirate Songs not appearing in a Disney movie or theme-park ride

You can't turn on the news or pick up a paper these days without noticing a rather strange but kinda awesome (from dry land, at least) new phenomenon: the return of pirates to the high seas! OK, I know what you're gonna say—this isn't some kiddie movie starring Johnny Depp as a Keith Richards-impersonating swashbuckler; this stuff is for real! Even so, you gotta admire the moxie of those Somali scallywags. I mean, it takes some pretty big balls—even for a crew of buccaneers—to knock off a Saudi oil tanker carrying $100 million in crude. Now that's some 21st-century-style booty!...  read more

Grateful Dead reunites tonight for Barack Obama

image not available

Barack Obama's presidential campaign has inspired several artists to produce the gift of song. Most recently, will.i.am and Jesse Dylan (son of Bob) released a song entitled "Yes We Can" in support of the hopeful candidate, which featured roughly a bajillion famous people as disparate as Nick Cannon, Herbie Hancock and Scarlett Johansson. Perhaps most famous was the song "I Got a Crush... on Obama," by Obama Girl, otherwise known as Amber Lee Ettinger, whose YouTube video has been viewed 5,751,880 times. It's possible that Obama's Girl is more famous than Obama himself. Tonight, one last band will shake off...  read more
