Warp Records Celebrates Twenty Years With Warp(20) Box Set
Twenty years ago, Warped Records opened its doors as a shop and record label in Sheffield, England. Too difficult to distinguish the "-ed" over the phone, they eventually dropped the last two letters and Warp Records was born. In the decades since, Warp has brought us the likes of sixty-something artists, among them Aphex Twin, Jamie Lidell, Gang Gang Dance, Squarepusher, LFO, and, more recently, Grizzly Bear and Battles. Now, the label is spending all of 2009 celebrating two decades of Warp—the perfect excuse for a premium box set.... read more

To celebrate the half-way point of 2009, this week Paste staffers are counting down their favorite albums and songs of the year (so far). Check out all of our lists here, and share your own favorites in the comments. You might notice that Passion Pit’s Manners isn’t on my list, and that’s because I don’t like Passion Pit very much. (Apparently I’m in the minority.) I didn’t include Wild Light’s “California On My Mind” either, but that’s only because Josh plays it so many times a day that I feel like it’s his own personal song. As for the music I did include if... read more

I've already had quite a few songs on repeat—particularly a somewhat profane power-pop anthem from Wild Light. So my Top 10 Songs has become a Top 20, partly because of the brilliant charity compilation Dark Was the Night. Bon Iver, who didn't release a... read more

In a day full of musical highlights from The Low Anthem, Animal Collective, Santigold, Grizzly Bear, Lucinda Williams, Beastie Boys and David Byrne, the most memorable came during Al Green's set on the big What Stage, when we broke into "Let's Stay Together." Hitting impossible high notes and sliding onto his knees, Rev. Al showed that his time in the pulpit has been just fine for the soul. He looked mighty dapper in his dark suit and tossed roses to pretty girls in the front the front rows.... read more

So, Grizzly Bear has a new album, Veckatimest, and people are freaking out about it almost as much as they'd freak out about, like, an actual grizzly bear. We just heard it clocked in at #8 on the Billboard chart for its first week of sales, 40% of which came from the Internet. Paste's own Matt Fink called it "a masterpiece" in his review last week. By all means, it's shaping up to be one of the biggest albums of the year—although when it comes time for the Paste staff to duke it out for our Best of 2009 list,... read more
