O'Death crushes out on R. Kelly, plays two Chicago shows this weekend
We were curious about what springs to mind when the New York City-based, Appalachian-tinged folk-punk rockers of O'Death think of Chicago. When we posed this query to the band, drummer David Rogers-Berry (who likes to beat his skins with chain links and other unusual noisemaking apparatuses) immediately took the baton and jotted down his five favorite R. The two-hour travel time to Hideout prevented the chance to see The Uglysuit and those that played before them, but nothing cools off an angry commuter like some free watermelon and a playful game of Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes with Tim Fite on a lovely Sunday. His lively hip-hop performance was one of the weekend's many kid-friendly offerings, which also included crafts, a Wee Hairy Beasties performance and a puppet show whose theater was rigged to a bike. ... read more

The 33 1/3 book series, which features noted authors musing on seminal albums, recently released Gentlemen, Bob Gendron's in-depth look at the Afghan Whigs' 1993 LP. To celebrate, the author will hold a book release and signing party at Hideout tonight, Tuesday, September 16th. According to Gendron, a fellow Chicago Tribune freelance music critic, Gentlemen is one of only a handful of 33 1/3 titles that contain original interviews with the band members and those close to them conducted specifically for the book.... read more
