It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Review: "Charlie's Mom Has Cancer" (Episode 8.06)

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Review: "Charlie's Mom Has Cancer" (Episode 8.06)

Season eight of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been a fascinating experiment for Glenn Howerton, Charlie Day and Rob McElhenney. The creative trio largely responsible for the show’s path have tooled around with the normal It’s Always Sunny formula and have turned in some of the most self-referential and self-aware episodes of television that makes the show more along the lines of Community and Arrested Development than Seinfeld, which it has been compared to for eight seasons. This eighth season has gone into the depths of the show, making callbacks to as far back as the first season. It’s an experiment that so far has worked pretty well, and even when it doesn’t, it’s compelling to watch. read more

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Review: "The Gang Gets Analyzed" (Episode 8.05)

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Review: "The Gang Gets Analyzed" (Episode 8.05)

“The Gang Gets Analyzed” has a lot of fun with how messed up these characters are, however I’m a bit surprised it didn’t go further. Dennis and Frank were unearthed as much more screwed up than we had previously thought, but Mac, Charlie and Dee just seemed like they were reinforcing their key character traits. But regardless, seeing how much help these five needed individually led to an amusing episode that showed us what lies underneath these screaming, maniacal lunatics. read more

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Review: “Thunder Gun Express” (Episode 7.11)

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Review: “Thunder Gun Express” (Episode 7.11)

It seems like this season of _It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia_ has been the most self-referential, for better and for worse. In this penultimate episode, “Thunder Gun Express”, before the two-part season finale, the show becomes essentially _It’s Always Sunny_’s version of _It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World_ except packed with references to episodes prior, and less laughs. read more

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia Review: "The Gang Gets Trapped" (Episode 7.09)

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia Review: "The Gang Gets Trapped" (Episode 7.09)

There have been several times on this season of _It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia_ where it’s seemed like the episode was ending just when it should be getting good. In “The Storm of the Century”, the episode ended right when the gang started looting and getting all sorts of crazy while last week’s episode “The Anti-Social Network”, the episode ended right when Dennis was getting ready to seek revenge on a guy he spent the entire episode trying to track down. In “The Gang Gets Trapped”, we get a rare episode where the usual structure of It’s Always Sunny is taken apart, by starting the episode mid-caper. read more
