24 Review: "2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m." and "3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m."
No surprise deaths. No questionable twists. No shocking torture scenes. Nearly all of the standbys we’ve come to expect from 24 over the past eight years were notably absent in the two-hour series finale. Nearly, for the one thing we’ve come to demand since day one remained the driving force ’til the bittersweet end: suspense, the race against time, exploited to near-perfection to go beyond a tale of vigilante-style revenge and government conspiracy and into the realm of something more weighted.... read more

In the years I've been watching 24, I can't ever recall being treated to such a lean, mean dosage of engaging back-to-back hours as the grouping of episodes leading up to the series finale (which airs next Monday at 8 p.m.). Say what you will about this season—the Dana Walsh/Jenny Scott storyline is certainly one blemish keeping Day 8 from achieving top-tier status—but since Renee Walker's murder six weeks ago, something new and fresh has emerged. And not just in regards to 24. Simply put, these hours comprise what has to be the greatest, bloodiest tale of revenge ever... read more

"There are no good guys here." Perhaps not, but while Cole Ortiz may be jaded by the players involved, as evidenced by a brief conversation with Chloe O'Brian in last night's shocking episode, I can't help but think these past couple hours of 24 are the baddest this season, if not the entire series. Bad in the good way—in the way we watch good people turn bad and bad guys influence the good. Strange that a show normally so clear on the Good vs. Evil motif is ending on such a deliciously messy buffet of food for thought, while ABC's... read more

**FINALE SPOILER ALERT**If you loathe the idea of hearing even the slightest bit of info regarding the 24 series finale, skip the next paragraph.About a month and a half ago, I mused in a review that Jack and Chloe were each other's only match. Meaning really, out of all the characters on the show, I can only tolerate and respect dissent toward either character if it's the other character dishing it out. Of course, I had no idea they would find themselves at odds with each other the past couple weeks. And I surely would never have imagined the series... read more

Question: What happens when TV's most BA renegade seeks out one of modern film's most gleefully psychotic cool guys?Answer: A seamless, happy exchange of guns and field equipment, apparently.... read more

Despite what he'd like you to believe, Jack Bauer is a creature of emotion. Even if controlled, logical emotion. Throughout the course of a day, the guy buries more bad experiences than a normal person deals with in a lifetime. "How does he cope with it?" you begin to wonder. Does he cope with it? Maybe after all is said and done he breaks down and has a Beatrix Kiddo-esque moment on the bathroom floor, sobbing with teddy bear close by. (Hey, you never know.) But you mess with his girl, and things get scary for the opposition... fast. ... read more

It's the final season of 24, and this episode reminded viewers in a gut-wrenching way of the one simple rule that has kept the series going this long: Jack Bauer cannot be happy. The best examples of this involve Jack's love interests, including his wife Teri Bauer, Nina Myers, Audrey Raines... and most recently Renee Walker.... read more

The silent clock strikes 8:00:00 a.m. with only eight episodes remaining in Day Eight. Coincidence? Probably, but if Jack was shaking the Magic 8-Ball hoping for a little luck... well, "Don't count on it" whacked him over the head and took off running early in the first hour of last night's double-whammy episodes.... read more

Day eight, 4:00:00 a.m. Yup. It's official. That's the final tick of the long-running 24 clock. By now you've heard the show's too expensive for Fox, the creators feel it's run its course and a movie is in the works. While the show has been at worst entertaining (if frustrating) the past few seasons, it's no longer shocking. Those first four years plus the jaw-dropping openers of days five and six unabashedly barreled through all those lame, unwritten rules and cliches both TV and cinema had force-fed us for years. Now, the series is tantamount to an aging punk rocker... read more

I have to admit up front I was a tad bit doubtful. Alright—I assumed the momentum from last week's solid, fast-paced hour wouldn't carry over to this week. Can you blame me? After the big event, I've routinely come to expect the usual lull for the characters (and the rest of us) to catch our collective breath. But I contest that last week—the halfway point, the hour that would "change everything"—was only setup for this week, the true hour that changed everything.... read more
