Live Review: Deerhunter, Pylon, Jay Reatard and Times New Viking @ Variety Playhouse; The Spooks, Cola Freaks and Mourdella @ Star Bar, 10/31/08

[Above: Jared Swilley of the Black Lips plays in Halloween-appropriate band The Spooks.]More good bands than Bonnaroo. The release of a long-awaited record. A 3-D extravaganza. A horde of crazed Danes. A theremin. A cassette so limited it doesn’t really exist. The Black Lips wearing bed sheets. And Jay Reatard playing (gasp) an acoustic guitar. It’s just another Halloween in Atlanta, as Deerhunter headed a line-up of hipster-approved indie rockers at the Variety Playhouse, while Black Lips side-project The Spooks descended upon the after-party at Star Bar, supported by a cadre of local bands and the aforementioned Danes....  read more

New York City does it big, and music festivals are no exception. Sure, the rest of the country has Sasquatch, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and countless other shindigs worth hitting up, but New York likes to thumb their suspenders with a mid-fall event called the CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival that's just about the biggest gig, well, anywhere....  read more

As readers might have noticed, we at Paste sort of have a crush on local music shops. They energize a local arts community in a way that even one thousand Best Buys and Wal-Marts could never match. One fine such example is Goner Records out in Memphis, Tenn., which is putting on its fifth annual music festival extravaganza this fall....  read more

Jay Reatard and Deerhunter pair up for Matador split 7"

The only certainties in life used to be death and taxes. Looks like you can add Jay Reatard's workmanlike output to the mix, because he's at it again. As part of Reatard's continuing 7" series with Matador, he'll be teaming up with post-punk dilettante Bradford Cox of Deerhunter to do a split 45. Cox will tackle Reatard's "Oh It's Such A Shame," and Reatard will bring his garage-rock flair to Deerhunter's "Fluorescent Gray."...  read more

Awww... why so pouty, Mr. Reatard? Didn't you hear that Matador Records has snatched you up with a "multi-album worldwide exclusive recording agreement"? For crying out loud, dude, you're rubbing elbows with Mission of Burma and Cat Power now! As previously reported, Matador was already releasing a cool half-dozen of this punk-rock powerhouse's 7" singles. But now it looks like the two parties are set for a longer-term relationship, according to a recent statement from Matador. There are currently plans for Reatard to drop a fresh solo album on the label in early 2009. If that's too long to wait...  read more
