It's About You

It's About You

Internationally renowned photographer Kurt Markus and his son Ian accepted an invitation from roots-rocker John Mellencamp to follow him on tour and produce a documentary about their experience. Mellencamp gave them a cryptic bit of instruction. “It’s about you,” he told them. So off they went, with a vintage 8mm movie camera and some simple sound equipment, to follow the band. What did they see? What did they learn? And why is this an important story to tell?... read more

John Mellencamp: On the Rural Route 7609

A few hits, fewer misses On the Rural Route 7609, John Mellencamp’s new four-disc retrospective, is no greatest-hits collection; only a few of his many Top 40 songs are featured, and it is instead intended to show his evolution as a songwriter—not a pop star—with alternate takes of popular vintage tracks blending naturally with (and providing context for) lesser-known, more recent material. The songs are arranged thematically rather than chronologically (much like recent Johnny Cash compilations), an approach that showcases Mellencamp’s strengths—his knack for lyrical detail and an empathy for the working class. 25th Annual Farm Aid Announces Location, Ticket Information

25th Annual Farm Aid Announces Location, Ticket Information

The first Farm Aid concert took place in 1985. It was organized by a triumvirate of music greats: Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp, who were joined in 2001 by Dave Matthews. The event seeks to highlight the plight of family farmers and provide support; it has raised over $37 million, convened conferences for family farmers, provided counseling, support and disaster relief, affected Congressional legislation and remained a nagging reminder about profit margin versus an investment in the quality of sustenance. This year, Farm Aid celebrates its 25th concert in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on October 2.... read more
