...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead: Festival Thyme

|
Mixed bag points to potentially exciting future

Repeat after me: I will not, under any circumstances, play prog rock. If ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead has any hopes of returning to its glory days, Conrad Keely and Co. should repeat this phrase like a mantra, perhaps even write it a couple hundred times on a chalk board a la Bart Simpson.

Raconteurs, Justice, TVOTR play Treasure Island fest

|
I mean honestly, Coachella is just so L.A. NorCal has it’s own music event now, as the Treasure Island Music Festival returns after its successful debut last year. This year’s two-day festival will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20 and Sunday, Sept. 21 and will feature headliners Justice and The Raconteurs along with other awesome acts such as Hot Chip, The Kills, TV On the Radio, Tegan & Sara, Vampire Weekend, Okkervil River, CSS, The Dodos and many more. Organized by the creators of the Noise Pop Festival and Another Planet Entertainment, the line-up reprises the style of 2007’s festival with a day of electronic and dance oriented groups and a day of indie-rock bands.

Justice leads Myspace Tour with Diplo, Chromeo, more

|

There are many things to appreciate that have been exported from the former Gaul lands: crêpes, fine wine, Zinedine Zidane’s approach to diplomacy. But now the world has a new French obsession as electronic duo, Justice, returns to North America this spring for the MySpace Music Tour with Diplo, Chromeo, Fancy, Dj Mehdi and Busy P.

Justice was nominated for three Grammys in 2008 for its latest album, , which included the absolutely infectious hit single “D.A.N.C.E.” but the group is also known for its extensive remixes of artists such as N*E*R*D, Franz Ferdinand and Metallica. After the MySpace Tour, Justice will head back to Europe for some late spring and summer dates.

Justice nominated for VMA Video of the Year

|

Are animated t-shirt designs on par with the brilliance of space zeppelins, Outkast Beatlemania and homoerotic cherubs? French duo Justice’s innovative cotton-driven video for "D.A.N.C.E." has been nominated for MTV VMA Video of the Year, and is certainly closer to the "Tonight, Tonight"/"Hey Ya" ideal than 2006 winner Panic! At the Disco's derivative wedding-turned freak show for “I Write Sins Not Tragedies.” Even MTV seems surprised at its own good taste, acknowledging Justice’s place in the awards as “perhaps the biggest shock of the entire nominations field.”

For the VMAs, which take place Sept. 9 in Las Vegas, Justice is pitted against Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable,” Rihanna’s “Umbrella,” Justice Timberlake’s “What Goes Around, Comes Around,” Kanye West’s “Stronger” and Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab.” Timberlake and Beyonce each received seven nods, which is not surprising considering categories like “Best Art Direction,” and “Best Cinematography” have been replaced by categories like “Quadruple Threat of the Year” and “Most Earthshattering Collaboration.” Awards that are taylor-made for artists do come and go so quickly here, like “Best Long Form Video,” which existed only in 1991 and was given to Madonna for “Immaculate Collection.”

October brings Justice to America

|

If this infectious video has taught us anything, it is that Justice is a dish best served in French electro-house beats and ever-shifting t-shirt designs (someone in the research and development sector* at Threadless needs to figure out this technology).

Justice will bring the ways and means of its digitalized dance music to the states this fall, primarily sticking to the West Coast for a baker’s dozen of performances. The Daft-punk-esque duo’s debut album, hit the number one spot on Billboard’s Electronic Albums chart after it premiered in June.

*What? They don't have one? We need a Menlo Park of textiles, and fast!

Peep this:

7 - San Diego, Calif. @ 4th & B
9 - Los Angeles, Calif. @ Henry Fonda Theater
10 - San Francisco, Calif. @ Mezzanine

17 - Chicago, Ill. @ Metro
18 - Toronto, Ontario @ Republik
19 - Montreal, Quebec @ Metropolis

21 - Philadelphia, Penn. @ Starlight Ballroom
