The King Khan & BBQ Show: Invisible Girl
More skuzzy garage rock from increasingly visible pair Before he donned his gold lamé hot pants and played wild shows like the unholy offspring of Little Richard and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, King Khan made a pair of loose, lewd, lo-fi albums with fellow Montreal ex-pat and former bandmate BBQ—a.k.a. Mark Sultan. Three years after their lip-smacking What’s for Dinner?, the duo re-teams for another set of R&B-inflected, ’60s-influenced garage rock with its juvenile-delinquent charms and dirty minds intact.... read more

“In the garage I feel safe No one cares about my ways In the garage Where I belong No one hears me sing this song In the garage” -Weezer: “In the Garage” For as long as dudes have been banging on six-strings, the garage has served as a safe haven of sorts, a place where, as Rivers Cuomo so melodically put it in the song above, said dudes could write “stupid words” and “stupid songs,” loving every one. (Tim Harrington plays music, really. Courtesy of Jeremy Farmer)The buzz and short attention spans I spoke of in Day One, and the newfound diversity heralded in Day Two, these things imploded upon each other the final hours of Sunday, with one holy rockness middle ground rising up from the rubble. The moment can be pinpointed actually, if you were to witness Les Savy Fav’s punk-maestro, Tim Harrington, careen his bald dome into a city garbage can, demanding the crowd hoist him, and his new stage, into the air so he could finish his song.Post-set comment from a fan:Dude wanted up,... read more
