American blues and R&B are infamous for countless reasons, subtlety generally not being one of them. Here are some classic examples, many of which have been ripped off by more than a few longhaired rock 'n' rollers. But I won't mention any names (Robert Plant!).

Led Zeppelin to tour with Alter Bridge frontman?

|
Since their 2007 one-off reunion concert, several members of Led Zeppelin have tried to arrange a splashy world tour, complete with new material from the reassembled band. The hitch has been former lead singer Robert Plant, who stalwartly refuses to rejoin the crew (even releasing a statement to refute the rumors). Remaining collaborators Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham (who replaced his father, John Bonham, as the band's drummer) recently told the press they're willing to take Zeppelin in a new direction. They've been sizing up replacement frontmen, and Billboard seems to think they've got an eye on Myles Kennedy.

Led Zeppelin to ramble on...without Robert Plant?

|
There are a million jokes we could make about a "Communication Breakdown," but in the interest of good taste let's just cut to heart of the story. Led Zeppelin, the greatest rock band to ever have a penchant for invoking Norse mythology (our apologies, Amon Amarth) is planning to go back on tour following its wildly popular reunion show last winter. And here's the catch: Robert Plant is out.

Alison Krauss & Robert Plant—the roots-music queen and the former Led Zep banshee—pulled down Album of the Year and Duo/Group of the Year honors Thursday night at the Americana Music Awards, a loose and congenial affair held at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, the so-called “mother church of country music.”

Members of Led Zeppelin recording new material

|

Led Zeppelin may be recording a new album, says collaborator Jason Bonham (via Pop Candy). The son of Zeppelin’s late drummer, John Bonham, Jason played with the band at its celebrated reunion concert last year in London. Since then, he’s been meeting with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones periodically to record, creating the band’s first studio work together in more than 25 years.

Fans petition Led Zeppelin for world tour

|

The planet's multitude of Led Zeppelin fans, in the wake of the widespread journalistic misunderstanding spurred by the announcement that Lez Zeppelin ("All girls. All Zeppelin.") would perform at Bonnaroo, have created a petition urging the actual Led Zeppelin to go on world tour. So far, it's been digitally signed by more than 8,300 people. News organizations, even those as reputable as the Associated Press, were apparently tricked by the one-letter name difference and prompted by months of rumors that Zeppelin would headline. (Other unfortunate publications included NME, Yahoo! Music News, The Chicago Sun-Times, AcesShowBiz.com and Telegraph.co.uk.)

Apparently, fans the world over feel the band owes them live shows after a recent reunion performance in London. The massive online outpouring may be irrelevant though, considering an international tour in the coming months would interfere with Robert Plant's scheduled dates with Alison Krauss.

Led Zeppelin partners with ESPN, NFL

|

The following news item about Led Zeppelin will not mention the band’s upcoming reunion concert, because we are all very well-acquainted with that forthcoming event. That said, this news item has a similar thematic thrust, because just like a news item about the band’s reunion concert, it is a news item about how much Led Zeppelin loves money.

Shocking, we know, but can you blame them? You could argue, of course, that Led Zeppelin’s unmentionable reunion concert is just a chance for the band to play for its fans, but somehow, the ticket prices make us a bit hesitant to make that claim. In any case, the latest bit of Zep info is solidly, undeniably in the “All About the Benjamins” category. The band has signed a deal with ESPN and the NFL.

What could the two possibly have in common, and why now? Well, both are generally enjoyed by dudes of all ages, and Led Zeppelin just released Mothership, a new compilation. Now, next time you watch a slammin’ NFL game, you might hear some slammin’ guitar riffs. The cumulative effect will make you want to buy football gear and a two-CD retrospective. That’s rock n’ roll!

Led Zeppelin, Metallica at Bonnaroo '08? Not so fast...

|

The Internet news cycle gets a bit crazy sometimes. Everyone's trying to get a jump on this or that story, and given the constant, ravenous demands of the public for content, rumor and innuendo often get tossed into the headlines. It's probably the worst with festival lineups. Apparently, everyone and your mother is already booked to play Coachella 2008 (no, seriously, your mother is getting great buzz on the blogs).

The latest victim in the lineup speculation game? Bonnaroo '08, which recently had its supposed headliners leaked to the Internet. Led Zeppelin and Metallica? Seriously, rumormongers, are you trying to give some middle-aged metalhead a heart attack? The source on this leak: an anonymous letter included in the newsletter of music industry opinion-molder Bob Lefsetz.

Yesterday, Billboard.com shot down this rumor with a statement from Bonnaroo promoters Superfly Presents and A.C. Entertainment.

"The rumors that are out there about the Bonnaroo 2008 headliners are inaccurate," the promotion team told Billboard. "We're very excited about the lineup that we're putting together for this year's festival. We'll be announcing the confirmed lineup toward the end of January/beginning of February."

Keep on dreaming, friends. And stay tuned for the Led Zeppelin reunion gig at London's O2 Arena, which still hasn't happened yet. Dec. 10 can't come soon enough.

In actual news, Metallica has included the first single from its next album in MTV's Rock Band video game, according to a report in the Rocky Mountain News. Will this set a trend for music distribution? After all, Metallica has always been on the cutting edge of that field. We kid, Lars! We kid because we love!

Led Zeppelin fan pays absurd amount for reunion show

|

Two weeks ago, Paste writer Jeremy Goldmeier mused, “Argh…you mean we have to stretch this Led Zeppelin circus out even further?” Of course, Mr. Goldmeier was referring to the delay of Led Zeppelin’s one-off reunion show due to Jimmy Page’s broken finger, but he could have also been referring to Paste’s extensive coverage of said reunion.

Well, Mr. Goldmeier, let’s stretch it further still. Today, we bring you news that a Led Zeppelin fan has paid £83,000 for two tickets to the concert on December 10. If you’re unfamiliar with British currency, £83,000 is roughly equal to 29,520,214 Hungarian Forint, or 1,316,123 Moroccan Dirhams. The money will benefit the BBC’s ‘Children in Need’ appeal. The Rolling Stones are taking notes on how to charge every one of their fans at least £83,000 during their next tour.

Check back in the next 30 seconds for eight more news items on Led Zeppelin’s reunion concert.

Jimmy Page's broken finger delays Led Zeppelin reunion

|

Argh... you mean we have to stretch this Led Zeppelin circus out even further? Okay, fine, Jimmy Page. Thanks for fracturing your finger this past weekend. Now it looks like the fans will have to wait until Dec. 10 for the grand Led Zeppelin reunion spectacle. Page's injury needs three weeks to heal properly, a specialist determined, meaning the previous concert date of Nov. 26 was out of the question.

“I am disappointed that we are forced to postpone the concert by two weeks," Page said in a statement. "However, Led Zeppelin have always set very high standards for ourselves, and we feel that this postponement will enable my injury to properly heal, and permit us to perform at the level that both the band and our fans have always been accustomed to.”

All tickets for the original date at London's O2 Arena will still be honored. Those who can't make that date can return tickets for a full refund by Nov. 14. Those refunded tickets will then be offered via a lottery system to people who originally registered for the show.

Until then, keep those tired eyes on the sunrise, waiting for the healing bone...

Led Zeppelin mp3s available for preorder

|

Last week, we told you that Led Zeppelin had caved to the brave new world of digital music. But now, we’re telling you to get more excited, since the entire Zeppelin canon is available for preorder on iTunes.

You can either download individual albums, or you can drop a cool $99 to treat yourself to the full 165-song catalog. Either way, if you pre-order any of the music before the November 13 release date, you’ll be entered into a drawing to see Led Zeppelin perform its one-off concert in London on November 26. If you win, you’ll be able to see a band that’s likely much less sparkling and clear than the mp3s that you’ll soon download, but hey, it's Led Zeppelin. Quit complaining!

Led Zeppelin catalog goes digital

|

At this point, it appears that no one can hold out on the digital music revolution any longer. The Beatles' solo projects caved one by one. Now it's time for Led Zeppelin to take some of that cooked-up black magic mysticism out of its music by putting it online.

On Nov. 13, the entire Led Zeppelin library - from its eponymous debut through 1982's Coda and live compilation How The West Was Won - will hit "all online music retailers," as per a press release. On the same day, the group's big ol' career retrospective Mothership will descend from the stars, arriving in stores physical and digital alike. Fans will also be able to add Led Zeppelin songs as ringtones, of course meaning that every dude in your office is soon going to have the opening bars to "Stairway to Heaven" as his ringer.

"We are pleased that the complete Led Zeppelin catalog will now be available digitally," said riff-interpolator extraordinaire Jimmy Page. "The addition of the digital option will better enable fans to obtain our music in whichever manner that they prefer."

Man... does that guy just talk in soundbites, or what?

As previously reported, the distinguished Zeppelin will hit the O2 Arena on Nov. 26 for a one-off reunion gig. The late John Bonham's son Jason will take over on the drums. Want a safe bet? Expect a DVD release of the show just in time for Christmas 2008.

Led Zeppelin to release retrospective CD and DVD

|

Come this November, Led Zeppelin fans are going to have plenty to be thankful for - you know, besides roasted turkey and sweet potatoes with the little marshmallows on top.

The classic rock group will release Mothership - a two-CD collection of 24 songs taken from all eight of the band's studio albums - on Nov. 13. According to the Rhino Entertainment (the lovely folks putting this out), Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones personally selected the songs on the compilation, choosing which ones best represented an overview of the band's entire career. The release rides the coattails of the band's announcement to reunite for one night only for a fund raising benefit dedicated to the recently deceased Ahmet Ertegun, founder of Atlantic Records and catalyst to the meteoric rise of Led Zeppelin's popularity over the years.

Like pouring hot gravy on our side of stuffing, the band also announced the Nov. 20 release of The Song Remains the Same, a concert DVD covering a three-nighter series of gigs at New York venue Madison Square Garden in 1973. Led Zeppelin to reunite for one show only

|

Reuniting for ONE NIGHT ONLY, Led Zeppelin announced a show to be performed on November 26th in London at the O2 arena, which means some lucky folks are going to get their faces rocked off in the UK.

The band made the decision in order to raise money for the Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund, a charity that pays for college scholarships in the United States, the United Kingdom and Turkey. Named after recently deceased founder of Atlantic Records, Ahmet Ertegun, the band's choice to play the show is seen as an homage to Ertegun, who helped further Zep's career.

Original members Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones will perform, and Jason Bonham, son of deceased drummer John Bonham, will play in his father's place.

If you want to go to the show, tickets are only a measley 125 pounds, or about 250 U.S. dollars. The tickets will be distributed by lottery, and registration for the lottery can be found at AhmetTribute.com.

The site has been clogged since the announcement, probably crashing the servers into web traffic hell.

Good luck!

Led Zeppelin: if not a reunion, at least a ride

|

After assisting in the development of Led Zeppelin – The Ride, a 150-foot-tall rollercoaster timed to “Whole Lotta Love” that developers say will be “an adrenaline rush rivaled only by a live Led Zeppelin concert,” Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones are (supposedly) ready to re-set the intensity standards with a reunion concert later this year.

According to NME.com, a fan who bumped into Plant in London earlier today inquired about the possibility of a reunion, to which Plant responded, “How did you find out about this?” He then added that a band meeting would occur later in the afternoon, but “there’s not a lot to work out as it’s only going to be one-off gig.”

Admittedly, this doesn't quite sound like MI5-quality intelligence, but NME is right certain the show will take place in November at London’s O2 Arena. Meanwhile, Led Zeppelin – The Ride opens sometime next spring as the main attraction of Hard Rock Park in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Someone with a couple thousand dollars to burn, please compare and contrast the frenzied pinnacles of each.

Pre-judgment: Although the coaster has the bonus of John Bonham’s drumming, albeit in pre-recorded format, repeat rides may leave one – wait for it – dazed and confused, splattering the pavement with physical graffiti.

If neither spectacle is affordable for you, there's the enduring power of albums and moving pictures, or "talkies." November brings a best-of compilation titled Mothership, along with a new DVD of The Song Remains the Same and a re-issued soundtrack.
