Ten Tangential Musical References from The Venture Brothers Seasons One and Two

image not available

It's no secret that Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick, creators of the late-night cartoon The Venture Brothers, are pop culture encyclopedias. It's also obvious that the geniuses behind the show are fans of music, and the show's numerous musical references run the gamut from obvious to extremely obscure....  read more

Sundance 2009: It Might Get Loud

image not available

A friend remarked to me that It Might Get Loud "has Paste written all over it," and sure enough it does seem to be up our alley. Filmmaker Davis Guggenheim, the director of An Inconvenient Truth, had the idea of bringing Jimmy Page, The Edge, and Jack White together to talk about guitars. And, you know, if they felt the urge, to jam a little. The result is a film that works as a brief chronicle of each musician's life and career — chock full of old clips, photos, concert footage, recordings, and visits to pivotal locations — as well...  read more

Despite rumors over past months that the remaining members of Led Zeppelin would record new material and tour after replacing frontman Robert Plant, "Led Zeppelin are over," said Jimmy Page's manager to MusicRadar. "If you didn't see them in 2007, you missed them. It's done. I can't be any clearer than that."...  read more

British musician Davy Graham died Monday from a massive seizure after a short battle with lung cancer. He was 68 years old. The little-known guitarist, singer and arranger got his start playing folk-blues clubs in the early 1960s, where his fusion of folk, blues and jazz with Arabic and Indian flourishes caught the ear of several artists who would become hugely influential in years to come....  read more

American blues and R&B are infamous for countless reasons, subtlety generally not being one of them. Here are some classic examples, many of which have been ripped off by more than a few longhaired rock 'n' rollers. But I won't mention any names (Robert Plant!)....  read more

Led Zeppelin to tour with Alter Bridge frontman?

Since their 2007 one-off reunion concert, several members of Led Zeppelin have tried to arrange a splashy world tour, complete with new material from the reassembled band. The hitch has been former lead singer Robert Plant, who stalwartly refuses to rejoin the crew (even releasing a statement to refute the rumors). Remaining collaborators Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham (who replaced his father, John Bonham, as the band's drummer) recently told the press they're willing to take Zeppelin in a new direction. They've been sizing up replacement frontmen, and Billboard seems to think they've got an eye on...  read more

Led Zeppelin to ramble on...without Robert Plant?

There are a million jokes we could make about a "Communication Breakdown," but in the interest of good taste let's just cut to heart of the story. Led Zeppelin, the greatest rock band to ever have a penchant for invoking Norse mythology (our apologies, Amon Amarth) is planning to go back on tour following its wildly popular reunion show last winter. And here's the catch: Robert Plant is out....  read more

Members of Led Zeppelin recording new material

Led Zeppelin may be recording a new album, says collaborator Jason Bonham (via Pop Candy). The son of Zeppelin’s late drummer, John Bonham, Jason played with the band at its celebrated reunion concert last year in London. Since then, he’s been meeting with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones periodically to record, creating the band’s first studio work together in more than 25 years....  read more
