Live Photos: Mike Geier's Kingsized Holiday Jubilee @ Variety Playhouse 12/13/08
Driving home Dec. 13, the streets of Little Five Points were filled with people looking exceptionally festive-- even for this holiday season. So many Santa costumes traipsed up the sidewalks, it felt like the North Pole had been uprooted, cloned and deposited in the center of Atlanta. Really, though, what had arrived was Mike Geier, his Kingsized Orchestra and the Dames Aflame burlesque troupe for another spectacular show at the Variety Playhouse. Paste:Local photographer Chad McFarlin was there to capture it all.... read more

[Above: Can Can's Patrick A.]When Can Can celebrated the release of their first LP, All Hell, at the Drunken Unicorn with fellow Atlanta bands Tenth To The Moon and The Swear, Paste:Local's photographer was there to capture all the pop-punk craziness. (Note: Trial By Fire also performed, but unfortunately none of us arrived in time to see them play.) It was a night celebrating the lead singer, the front-person of every act looming larger than life. Elizabeth Elkins led The Swear with a thundering certainty. Same goes for Mitchell Foy, who fronted Tenth To The Moon in face paint and strategically... read more

As Chicago marked the somber 40th anniversary of the 1968 Democratic National Convention protests, Pilsen's National Museum of Mexican Art opened its 22nd annual La Vida Sin Fin exhibition in honor of the Mexican Day of the Dead holiday, celebrated each Nov. 1 and 2. Running through Dec. 14th, the exhibit's paintings, etchings, photography and installations are dedicated to the victims of another historical coup, the Tlatelolco Massacre, which devastated Mexico City just months after the violence in our own town. [Above: NOBUNNY plays the second night of the Atlanta Mess-Around.] Like Day One of the Mess-Around, Day Two got off to an unusually early start for the Earl. But despite numerous warnings the previous evening that Saturday's festivities would get underway promptly at half past eight, the crowd was still unfortunately thin as Oxford, Mississippi's The Black and Whites kicked off the festival's second, poppier night.... read more

[Above: Baby Shakes play the first night of the Atlanta Mess-Around.]Though the three Atlanta labels behind the two-day Atlanta Mess-Around have released a diverse array of music, their punk and power pop offerings have evolved into the unquestionable centerpieces of the scene, as evidenced by the Mess-Around's line-ups: The second night would boast a strong pop sensibility, but the first was almost all about punk rock. ... read more

[Above: AIDS Wolf's Chloe Lum]It would be easy to call last Wednesday at the Earl a theme night: All three bands were intentionally loud and messy, all three led by female singers (none of whom played an instrument, the star-shaped tambourine wielded by Vera Fang's Zopi Kristjanson) and all three women gripped the microphone alone and howled into the audience. But that's where the similarities stopped.... read more

On the verge of making their trip to CMJ in New York, Atlanta's All Night Drug Prowling Wolves celebrated the release of their CD Friday night at the Star Bar. They were joined by the Chattanooga, Tenn., rockers Giant Tiger, as well as by Brooklyn band The Weight. Affection abounded (apparently).
