Band of the Week: Magik Markers

|

Hometown: Brooklyn, N.Y.
Fun Fact: Absolutely no one spells their name right.
Why They're Worth Watching: Their live show keeps getting better and louder, and will continue to do so, what with the duo's impending two-guitarist expansion.
For Fans Of: The Dead C, early Sonic Youth, Bardo Pond

The rather useless term “noise-pop” is frequently attached to bands that are deficient in one or both of those areas. Magik Markers can bring the noise. They can rock an extended jam that veers outside of structure or melody. They are good at these things, but truthfully, who isn’t? There is a very thin line between tomfoolery and talent in the noise scene — any group of chumps with a table of pedals can be the next Wolf Eyes. But though the Magik Markers attract a noisenik following, they are a pop band at heart, and a very catchy one at that. Their most accomplished full-length to date, Boss, hits the streets tomorrow (Sept. 25) via the appropriate home of Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace.

Magik Markers restrain themselves on new album

|

It is interesting how folks who videotape noise bands end up doing said bands one better. You thought twenty straight minutes of feedback was challenging? Try a mere five minutes of feedback recorded through a sub-par digital camera mic, compressed one or two times over for YouTube. Oh the unholy mess of cacophonous brain-to-bowel shaking sonics that result.

Magik Markers live videos are impressively painful. Observe:
- BWWWBBWWWBWWWWAHBWWAHWBWAHH
- EEESKKKKEEEEKKKSKKSKKKKKKRRRRRRRRR
- PLIKeeEEAH PLIKeeEEAH PLIKeeEEAH

For their very first studio album, on Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace label, the Markers claim to exhibit a new sense of “formality and restraint.” Who wants to bet this won’t carry over to the live show (either terrible or totally aces, depending on how much you like getting your senses cheese-grated by spastic boy-girl duos) Called Boss, the record was produced by Sonic Youth’s Lee Renaldo (see him talk about the making of Boss) and features Elisa Ambrogio on vocals and guitar and Pete Nolan on drums.

BOSS will be released September 25. Here is the track list:
1 - "Axis Mundi"
2 - "Body Rot"
3 - "Last of the Lemach Line"
4 - "Empty Bottles"
5 - "Taste"
6 - "Four/The Ballad of Harry Angstrom"
7 - "Pat Garrett"
8 - "Bad Dream/Hartford's Beat Suite"
9 - "Circle"
