Andy Hull does the nautical gnash
Concept albums are tricky beasts. While centering an entire work on one subject might result in a timeless masterpiece like Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, the project could also potentially slide into Chris Gaines-ville with just a few wrong turns of the rudder.

[Above: Manchester Orchestra's Andy Hull]
Onstage, Manchester Orchestra mixes the captivating vocals and compelling arrangements of its records with hardcore guitar and screaming, as lead singer Andy Hull abandons his sweet, high tenor for larynx-wrenching wails. I could listen to his on-record singing voice for hours and be happier for it, but last night all I could think was what a shame it was.

Given the recent announcement of a new EP, album and tour, it's becoming increasingly apparent Manchester Orchestra's lead singer Andy Hull might be the busiest man in music.

When Muddy Waters referenced a "gypsy woman" in the song of the same name, he was giving a shout out to traditions of Louisiana's long-standing voodoo culture. New Orleans continues to celebrate those traditions with its 10th annual Voodoo Music Experience. And while the name may sound rather ominous to those not in the know, the experience is more of the musical variety than the hexing one.

Manchester Orchestra is not an orchestra.
Manchester Orchestra is not from Manchester.
The first rule about Manchester Orchestra is you don't talk about Manchester Orchestra.
Ahem, our apologies.
Manchester Orchestra is actually set to head out on tour with L.A.'s Say Anything, kicking off their road trip March 13 in Hollywood, Calif. The band is still basking in the glow left by I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child, which was originally released in 2006 on Favorite Gentlemen, then re-released last year on Canvasback. It's the very album that got them on The Late Show With David Letterman:
Performance addicts, perhaps, the Atlantans met their 2007 goal of playing over 200 live shows, all while doing stints with the likes of Kings of Leon, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Brand New, Saves The Day and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Now, they're shaping up to beat that record, following their Say Anything tour with a stop at Coachella.

As we previously reported, the Atlanta natives of Manchester Orchestra have been on tour this fall. Now, the indie-rock group has extended its North American tour all the way through Nov. 20, co-headlining with Annuals. The Georgia boys have also teamed up with Annuals to produce a limited edition 7-inch, in which both bands cover each other’s songs. The album is only being sold at the shows, though, so you best get tickets if you want a chance to hear this unique collaboration.
For those who won’t be able to catch Manchester's live act, the band is scheduled to perform on Late Night With Conan O'Brien on Halloween night. And in other news, Sam Erickson, who has previously worked with My Morning Jacket and Dave Matthews, has filmed a documentary on the band called What’s Left Behind. The film follows Manchester Orchestra as the band tours around the south for a week. No news on when the doc is set to come out.

Hometown: Atlanta, Ga. Members [L-R]: Andy Hull (vocals, guitar), Chris Freeman (keyboards), Robert McDowell (guitar), Jeremiah Edmond (drums), Jonathan Corley (bass) Fun Fact: Hull and Corley began collaborating in 8th grade, when they penned the epic “Braves Baseball 1994.” Why They’re Worth Watching: The maturity and conceptual depth of 20-year-old frontman Hull’s songwriting are years beyond his age, and the band’s current lineup has the chemistry, chops and personality to deftly pull off his tunes. For Fans Of: Pedro the Lion, The Weakerthans, early Radiohead
A striking image graces the cover of Manchester Orchestra’s debut LP, I’m Like a Virgin Losing a Child. It’s a young woman glancing up for a split second, frozen in time, her mysterious gaze momentarily trained on the camera as she unpacks her suitcase on her honeymoon night. Drummer Jeremiah Edmond accidentally stumbled on the faded color photograph years ago, after purchasing what he thought was a shoebox full of random pictures at a thrift store.
It turns out, though, that the pictures actually catalog the entire young life—birth, school, graduation, the military and marriage—of a man named James Edward Timmerman. The woman on the album cover is his wife. The picture of her (from the late ’50s) is the last photo in the chronology, and when the band saw it for the first time, it was as if hundreds of tiny flashbulbs went off in their minds; In a chillingly perfect way, the image paralleled the nakedly personal coming-of-age/lost-innocence songs singer/guitarist Andy Hull had been writing.
“The last line on the record is ‘we can’t believe without bleeding,’” says Hull, “and I think that sums it up, like, you can’t really understand life until you’ve gone through everything. And the line, ‘I’m like a virgin losing a child,’ that’s her. For me, this [photo] represents the beginning and the end. She looks up and it’s like, ‘is she sad or is she excited?’”
“And it’s also cool,” adds bassist Jonathan Corley, “that there could be an 80-year-old woman somewhere out there who walks into a record shop and picks up an album with herself on the cover… on her honeymoon.”
We're bringing you some of the artists we think are the best of what's next. Featuring selections from Slow Runner, Janelle Monae, The Spring Standards and more!
