The 8 Best Songs in a Waltz Time Signature
I was listening to Beirut’s “A Sunday Smile” last night, and it hit me: This song is in a waltz time signature! No one knows precisely when this famous dance and music style got started, but historians have guesstimated the mid-to-late 16th century. This, in turn, got me thinking: How many other great songs out there was I unwittingly tapping my foot to in 3:4 time? Just how popular and enduring is this musical style? As it turns out, very—here’s eight of the best.... read more

For the better part of five years, Metallica has been running a nifty operation on LiveMetallica.com: high-quality audio recordings of the band's concerts, ranging from the early eighties all the way to the thrash-meisters' current tour. Until recently, though, users didn't have the option of buying single songs; you either ponied up the $9.95 for the whole recording or went without. Seems like they've learned a thing or three from their recent embrace with iTunes, because LiveMetallica.com just announced that you can download any single track you'd like at the standard 99-cent price-point.... read more

Take a spin with us in the way-back machine, to ancient history: December of last year. Eleventh-hour negotiations between Warner Music Group and YouTube broke down, and Warner decided to pull (or mute) all their music on the video-sharing website. Now, this had more to do with YouTube's enormous popularity than any specific beef; musicians and record labels account for a huge percentage of pageviews on the 'Tube, and record labels don't see too much ad revenue in return.... read more

The art of the rock documentary is a delicate one. A good rockumentary strikes a balance between moving concert footage and revealing backstage confessions, telling a story while illuminating the band's impact on both fans and the cultural zeitgeist. Because they capture a broad swath of culture from such a unique perspective, they are often compelling films, which makes it hard to pick only 10 to call “the best.” Excluding those that are concert films (sorry, Scorcese, but The Last Waltz falls in this category, as well as Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense), here are the definitive top 10 rock... read more

If you thought that custom edition Vans were strictly the purview of pop-punk bands, think twice. Think three times if you need to. An ad from this month's issue of Decibel (pictured above) shows a pair of Vans emblazoned with the man-deer-demon from the cover of Mastodon's 2006 tour-de-rock, Blood Mountain. Now you'll have some very metal footwear for your own epic quest to find the Crystal Skull. No word yet on whether the deer skull will be included or if it's one of those pre-order promo dealies.... read more
