Last night on _The Colbert Report_, Stephen Colbert interviewed Brian Eno. After the interview, Colbert placed a copy of R.E.M.’s newest compilation on his shelf to commemorate the recently broken up band. But then Colbert went on to place R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe on his shelf as well, as Stipe, Colbert and Eno went on to all sing a rendition of “Lean on Me” together. R.E.M.‘s new album Collapse Into Now comes out March 8, but the second track has already leaked (check out the first one, “Discoverer,” here). Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder sings along with Michael Stipe on “It Happened Today.” Other guests on the album include Patti Smith, Peaches and Lenny Kaye. A couple days ago, R.E.M released two short videos filmed by a covert/hirsute Michael Stipe. Haphazardly focusing the camera on the occasional electric guitar or amplifier, Stipe meanders through the rooms where his band is recording its 15th studio record. According to Pop Candy, Grammy Award-winning Jacknife Lee is producing the new album, still in its early stages.
