This week’s Modern Family episode “Hit and Run” focused on several stories for the Pritchett and Dunphy clans. Cam and Mitchell argue about Cam’s anger management issues; Claire considers a run for town council; Gloria feels left out by Jay and Manny when they each deal with issues at work and school; Haley gets bilked out of $900 trying to buy fake IDs; and Jay feels old and humiliated when he has to work with a business partner’s son on building closets for a new high-rise. Unlike last week when the show clicked on all cylinders, “Hit and Run” felt... read more

Our main criticism of last week’s Modern Family focused on how the writers tried to cram too much funny into 22 minutes. It can be difficult to find the right balance and keep a focus with such a large ensemble cast. But this week’s episode, “Door to Door,” hit the sweet spot. Many of the cast members were forced to go door-to-door in their respective neighborhoods for some reason or another. Jay tries to teach Manny business lessons by helping him sell wrapping paper for a school fundraiser; Claire tries to enlist her family in gathering 50 signatures in order... read more

Modern Family dominated last week’s Emmy Awards with the family comedy winning five throughout the evening. Julie Bowen won for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, besting costar Sofia Vergara. Bowen’s TV husband Ty Burrell also picked up his first Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, beating out nominated co-stars Ed O’Neill, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet. The show also picked up awards for writing, directing and a rather anticlimactic award for Outstanding Comedy Series. The repetitive winning caused host Jane Lynch to quip: “Welcome back to the `Modern Family’ award show. We’ve decided to... read more

Reviewing most sitcoms poses challenges for writers. At some point in analyzing a show, we discover the “formula” and pick up the patterns as the weeks progress. There are, of course, exceptions to the rule—especially with the cracked-out episodes we’ve caught from NBC’s Community this season—but unfortunately, with last night’s season two finale of Modern Family, it fell more into the rule category than the exceptional one.... read more

Last night’s Modern Family episode focused around one word: insecurity. As Alex prepares her valedictory graduation speech from junior high school—that kiddie pool of self-loathing and self-doubt—the rest of the Dunphys and Pritchetts are tapping into their own insecurities as they prepare for the ceremony.... read more

Last night’s episode of Modern Family focused on role reversal, with the family heads intentionally—or unwittingly—trading places with their partners. The good cop, bad cop routine worked with varying results among the Pritchett and Dunphy clans.... read more

The Pritchetts and the Dunphys come together celebrate Mother’s Day the old-fashioned way—with lots of bickering served up with guilt on the side. In last night’s episode, the three families’ storylines were closely woven together, but without the numerous highs or lows of previous episodes. This episode ran right down the middle, which is too bad because it was a perfect night to hand over the reigns to hot mamas Claire and Gloria, who were ultimately saddled with the weakest part of the plot.... read more

In this week’s episode, “Someone to Watch Over Lily,” the kids of Modern Family were given a little more scenery to chew on, and Rico Rodriguez, who plays the child-man Manny Delgado, ate up every line given to him and spit ’em out like a seasoned pro. The show’s opening scene has Manny advising Mitchell and Cameron to accept Jay’s coffee: “It’s French press,” Manny says. “I was doubtful, too, but I can’t see myself going back to drip.” Spoken like a true, pint-sized hipster.... read more
