On Sunday night, the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards will hosted by Late Night host Jimmy Fallon. Unfortunately, as far as we know, he won’t be bringing along his backing band The Roots. But we’ll be bringing you commentary throughout the night on our live blog. I’ll be joined by Paste publisher Nick Purdy and all of you in Twitter-land so check back on our site Sunday 8pm ET, 5pm PT. In the meantime, here are my gripes, faulty predictions and cocksure proclamations about the 2010 Primetime Emmys.... read more

After a couple episodes of taking the show to new locations and going as far into unconventional material as it’s willing to go, Modern Family reigns things back into the homes for its season finale. It’s a fitting choice for the show, which really is more about the little, tiny irritations of life than anything else. While trips are universal, they’re a much smaller slice of our lives than the day-to-day that’s become the show’s calling card. The finale shows off what the show’s audience is most interested in, but doing so better than it has before; for the most... read more

After a string of episodes where we saw Modern Family split into several largely unrelated plots, my favorite thing about last week was seeing everyone together. Not that everyone has to necessarily interact for it to be a good episode, but I’d really prefer not having characters entirely than giving them a C-plot and four minutes of screen time that are largely wasted. The show tends to feel short as it is and necessitating a minimum of three different foci for each episode just cuts into valuable time—there’s never been an episode of the show that I wouldn’t enjoy seeing... read more

NBC has tapped some of its funniest personalities to present this year’s Emmy nominations. Community’s Joel McHale (who plays reluctant student Jeff Winger) and Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara (the hilarious Gloria) will be handling the announcements of this year’s Emmy nominees come July 8. The early morning ceremony will also include John Shaffner, the TV Academy chairman and CEO.... read more

One thing that Modern Family does extremely well is take universal human experiences and throw them at the show’s characters. This can lead to somewhat dull plots at times, but conversely it leads to more “I know exactly how s/he feels” moments than any other show out there, which I think is part of its charm. As the title implies, “Airport 2010” is an episode entirely revolving around the airport experience and the boredom, frustration and annoyance flying causes in all of our lives. It’s why they’re so inspirational to bad stand-up routines and a constant source of discussion... read more

The best thing about Modern Family, by leaps and bounds, is its characters. The show's plots tend to be extremely minor (though that's sometimes the point) and its jokes can be beyond telegraphed, but there's no getting away from how sweet the family itself is and the nuanced performances offered week after week from its cast. With the exception of "Fizbo," the show's simply not as funny as other ones out there. But these strong characters let it frequently get by regardless, especially when they're coupled with truly universal-to-every-family stories.... read more
