Adam Green: Sixes and Sevens

|
Since going solo from the Moldy Peaches four albums ago, Adam Green has upgraded his gleefully primitive aesthetic into a more sophisticated, knowing sound. His sense of humor, however, has stayed the same (minus a few dick jokes). But that’s the problem with his new album, Sixes & Sevens. Whenever he does something musically interesting, like using disco strings on “Twee Twee Dee,” he backtracks toward something either cutesy dumb or self-consciously weird, like the pan flute on “You Get So Lucky.” “Tropical Island” and “It’s a Fine” prove he can write eccentric songs that don’t sacrifice humor for insight, but “Grandma Shirley and Papa” and the nonsensical spoken-word piece “That Sounds Like a Pony” prove that sophomoric hijinks remain a top priority. The album’s length--20 tracks--only compounds its overriding glibness, as if Green is daring us to give him the chance he deserves.

Moldy Peaches to re-release Juno hit as single

|

The Moldy Peaches will release their hit song “Anyone Else But You,” from the chart-topping Juno soundtrack as a single later this month, NME reports.

New interest in duo Adam Green and Kimya Dawson's single grew quickly after it was used in Jason Reitman’s 2007 breakout film Juno. Stars Ellen Page and Michael Cera performed their own version of “Anyone Else But You” in the film, which is included on the soundtrack along with the original. Reitman also used five of Dawson’s songs, and two tracks from her band Antsy Pants, to anchor the film’s soundtrack, which hit number one on the Billboard sales chart in January.

The Peaches’ upcoming single “Anyone Else But You” was first released on the duo’s debut album in 2001. Their last new album was released in 2004, and they have since declared themselves on “indefinite hiatus.” In the meantime, Dawson and Green have been nurturing solo careers. Dawson has released six solo albums, and a seventh record as a member of Antsy Pants. Green has released four solo records, and will release his latest album, Sixes and Sevens, March 10 on Rough Trade.

The “Anyone Else But You” single hits stores on Feb. 25.
