Awake Review: “Game Day” (Episode 1.9)
Awake has a silent brilliance to it. The show slowly gives you the clues you need, hints at ways you might be able to solve the weekly crimes yourself and then plays out, giving the audience all the information, allowing them to play detective along with Michael and his partners. The thing that makes this different from most detective shows is of course the dueling realities, so by putting us in Michael’s shoes, we have all the information he has as well in trying to solve the crimes with him. “Game Day” is one of the better examples of how Awake does it, even if they crimes are somewhat predictable in nature. read more

For the most part, Touch is usually pretty decent at telling an interesting story about Martin and his son Jake. The show knows well enough that this is the most important aspect and that the connections are sometimes nice additions, but not the focal point of why people are tuning in. “Noosphere Rising” gives us a fairly decent Martin story, unfortunately the two connection stories, which take up at least half the episode, are some of the worst that Touch has done so far. read more

I’m glad Xenoblade Chronicles is on the Wii. If it were on the 360 or the PS3, then you could see my achievement list (Xenoblade Chronicles has achievements, which give you an experience point boost for unlocking them) and realize that I haven’t finished this game.... read more

Skullgirls is the first fighting game ever made that wants you to play it like a fighting game. Most fighting games don’t care at all if you play them like a fighting game; they leave that to the people who have been playing them for decades. Some occasionally give a lazy, boring tutorial, asking you to press buttons every minute or so without explaining how they will ever become important, as if the game was an indescribably slow paced remake of Guitar Hero.... read more

Most of us are suckers for a good child prodigy story. Be it Bobby Fischer, Akeelah Anderson, Salinger’s Glass family or Anderson’s Tenenbaums, we gawk at the seemingly miraculous abilities, identify with the weird families, weep at the ostracism and cheer at the victories. All of these factors are in play in Dennis Lee’s Jesus Henry Christ, the story of a remarkable boy named Henry and his quest to find his biological father.... read more

The first ten minutes of Sound of My Voice are some of the most claustrophobic, dread-filled moments to grace American cinema in years. With no preamble, we follow a young couple as they voluntarily submit to an ominous set of late-night rituals beginning with handing over their valuables and allowing themselves to be handcuffed and blindfolded, and culminating in an elaborate secret handshake and meeting with a mysterious leader in a basement somewhere in the San Fernando Valley.... read more

For the latter half of this season, New Girl has been trying to get its characters to get out of the characterizations that were initially put upon them. Jess has become less obnoxiously quirky, Schmidt has shown less of a womanizer, Schmidt is prouder to show his soft side. “Tomatoes” harkens back to these earlier ideas of these characters, in an episode that sets us up for the final pair of episodes left. read more
