The Killing Review: "Donnie or Marie" (Episode 2.12)
After last week’s episode it almost certainly looks as if Richmond’s two trusty advisors, Jamie or Gwen, have jumped to suspect numbers one and two. This week’s offering of The Killing zeroes in on Rosie Larsen’s killer and barrels through a lot of loose ends that they never thought about checking. read more

At the last few Sundance Film Festivals, a running joke has developed about the ubiquity of Mark Duplass. It seems like if he’s not writing and directing an independent film with his brother Jay (Cyrus, Jeff, Who Lives at Home), he’s producing and/or starring in another. But while indie film fans may feel like they’ve gotten a handle on Duplass’s hipster vibe, his performance in Safety Not Guaranteed shows that he can be mysterious as well as funny, brooding as well as charming.... read more

Since breaking out of the mumblecore movies (Hannah Takes the Stairs) in which she got her start as both an actress and a writer-director, Greta Gerwig has emerged in films like Greenberg and No Strings Attached as a fresh face among supporting casts. Tall and curvy, she’s at once beautiful and awkward, a real-world woman who’s easy to get behind—especially in the couple of plum indie leads (Damsels in Distress and now Lola Versus) that she landed this year. The character of Lola, though, poses a bit of a challenge—portraying a suddenly single 29-year-old self-involvedly stumbling through the New York... read more

Director Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy and most recently Mao’s Last Dancer) scored a coup by casting Jane Fonda as the boho grandma in the family drama, Peace, Love & Misunderstanding. The iconic Oscar winner retired from film in the ’90s and has been selective upon her return. But as felicitous as it might seem to have the infamous political activist play a latter-day hippie, unfortunately her character, Grace, comes off as a caricature in a Halloween costume rather than a fully realized role. That she grows pot, smokes it with her grandkids and entertains lovers isn’t nearly as shocking... read more

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the Beatles’ glorious 40-minute musical masterpiece, had been enjoying enormous acclaim and popularity for about a year when the animated Yellow Submarine hit theaters in 1968, acting as a loose extension of the album’s contemplations on fame, identity and ’60s psychedelia. The film’s recent frame-by-frame restoration, and translation onto Blu-ray disc, evokes more nostalgia than brilliance, save for one element: The unbelievable timelessness of the songs included on the soundtrack.... read more
