Michael Phelps’ Olympic screen time is up for now, but viewer interest has persisted beyond the 14-time gold medalist’s sports coverage. In the last week, he’s been picked up as a presenter on MTV's Video Music Awards, and on Sept. 13 he will host the season premiere of Saturday Night Live, accompanied by musical guest Lil Wayne.

First political ads to air on MTV

MTV viewers have been told to "Choose or Lose" for years, but never before have they been able to watch full-fledged political ads between installments of My Super Sweet Sixteen. At least, not until recently. MTV has confirmed that it will now allow official advertisements from political candidates and campaign committees on its airwaves.

Canadian MTV gets 4Real

|

MTV has launched a new reality show that promotes world culture and social change. Entitled 4Real, the eight-part, half-hour series features celebrities like Joaquin Phoenix, Mos Def and M.I.A. traveling around the world to meet with leaders affecting change in a variety of countries that include Haiti, Kenya, and Liberia.

In the episode featuring Mos Def, the mighty Mos visits the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro to speak with MV Bill, the country's #1 rap artist, who empowers favela youth in the community through hip-hop music.

The show will premiere on MTV.ca on April 14 at 8 p.m. 4Real will also air on the National Geographic Channel in 166 other countries and 35 languages, not including Canada, the U.S., or the U.K. There's no word yet on when or if the show will screen in the United States.
